Ableton live on MacBook Pro

Post by Cremig » Thu Feb 21, 2013 7:08 am

Hello,

I´m switching from desktop PC to MacBook Pro but I´m not sure which model is suitable for me. The two main requirements are:
a) ableton live (+reason +massive) should run as fluidly as possible
b) the MacBook should be as portable as possible, as I need to carry it with me in a backpack for 3 to 5 days a week.

So I tend to the 13" modell (2,9 GHz Intel i7 dual-core, 8GB RAM) at the moment but wonder if I should accept the larger 15" modell (2,3 GHz Intel i7 quad-core) for better performance.

Well, all help is much appreciated!

Thank you ;)

Ableton/reason/massive will run great on either one of those computers, although, i would get the best processor you can afford. i have the 13"......I will say, sometimes I wish I had a bigger screen.

I was working on a desktop PC with Intel Core 2 Duo at 3 GHz until now and did not have any problems with the CPU (when using ableton + reason + massive). So, will 4 cores make such a huge difference? It´s not about the more cost, I just really want the device to be as small as possible as I need to carry it a lot. In studio I will connect it to a second monitor btw.

I have a dual core I 5....I don't have any problems running live and a few NI synths, I have reason too, but I rarely wire it up to live.
i would buy the best processor you can get. as far as size.....the 15" is not that much bigger than the 13"...the extra couple inches will not make that much of a difference in the back pack.

I've got a 17" MBP

2.8 GHz Intel Core i7
8GB 1067 MHz DDR3

Runs perfect - and I also came from PC before.

Would never go back to PC for music production again.

Mea maxima culpa.
Am I the only one who always says "ableton" instead of "live" when talking about "live"?

I use both myself much like I would say I drive a Nissan or a Qashqai (don't snigger, I have kids...) interchangeably. But, most importantly, does it matter?! No!

Quad core i7. Quad core i7. Quad core i7.

Why?

Because no matter how well LIVE runs on lesser processors, you never know when LIVE might become more CPU demanding (Live 9?) or when some instruments (Diva? Tremor?) might become taxing on your processor. Buying a quad core i7 will prepare you best for whatever the future brings.

For the best resource on MB Pro, check all models here: http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/m ... okpro.html

Best of luck to you, and welcome to Macintosh.

Hm,sounds reasonable. Btw, does anyone know the specs for Live 9?

It is true what others say about quad, I love the power, more screen real estate but I used to have with my 13`MBP with me almost at all times. After taking 15`with few times never do it except for gigs, or if I really must. I hate the bulkiness, it is almost like a desktop, pain to use in a car, tour bus or plain, hate this box no matter how fast it is. Should have bought the 2.9 MBP 13`, now, just wait for next MBP release to get truly portable computer, since for me 15`MBP is definitely .
