severe performance problems using L5

Post by schildknecht » Sun Jul 24, 2005 7:08 pm

hi all

since i installed L5 i'm experiencing severe performance probs.
glitches and dropouts all the time. this is a complete showstopper.

i'm using a set built with L4 with a lot of samples
(small in size/high samplecount; 800MB)
in L4 everything worked fine. from time to time i saw the
"diskload warning lamp" but no dropouts and glitches appeared.

the same set does not work in L5 (as described above).

both apps are installed and used on the same machine...
(asus w1n, 1.6ghz centrino, 512mb ram, 80 gb hd, xp pro)

so far L5 is useless for me.

am i alone with this problem?
:(

Did you "fine tuned" your sound card in the preferences? There's a lesson in Live 5 to set things okay, just in case you need it.

hi zekrab

thank you for replying.
yes. i fine tuned almost everything you can fine tune.
got a couple of years experience with such things...

i think its not a prob of my machine - live4 runs fine -
as well as cubase sx3...

the problems arose with installation/operation of live5.
even the gui is kind of sluggish/slow.

but regarding your input i will double-check settings.

thanks so far.

Same problem here

Got these probs a bit in Live 4. I get them all the time in 5.
I think it may be to do with large sets. So, for people producing using Live I'm sure L5 runs like a dream, however, for those of us using Live on stage and wanting a large amount of audio material at our disposal there are big problems currently.

yea live 5.0.1 is EXTREMELY slow for me. even the audio barely plays, with tons of glitches and drop outs.

live beta 20 on the other hand, is quite stable for me. i'm not sure wats gong on.

hey splashmas
thanks for replying.

aah i'm somehow happy that i'm not the only one facing these problems..
don't get me wrong ...

in L4 i never had comparable problems. as mentioned i was operating sharp at the "diskstream-limit" of my machine... but never had any dropouts.

in L5 same set - no go.

i got the feeling that the ram-utilitzation in L5 is more extensive.
got to check this out. it this is the case - maybe more ram is an solution.

any official statement to this performance issue?

kind regards

hi Livewire

you say these problems are introduced with the first official release?
beta20 worked better for you?
unfortunately i never tested an beta release...

hmm ... strange.

more features - more complex code - less stable/powerful app?
i hope ableton proofs me wrong...

I’m guessing there are “blockers : in the beta ver so the abs can see what going on within the prog

Could be ram

But...

I know not a lot about the technical sidew of computers but....

If you have a set with loads of different clips (ie a large set) then there's a milliion different options for what could be played next. Once a play button is pushed, Live has to be able to play the desired clip by the next quantisation interval. Surely a pretty stressful task for a computer, and worse with bigger sets.

Now I didn't have this problem in L3, did a little in L4 (admittedly my set was getting bigger), now it's really bad in L5 (window's in general slows down loads when playing a large live set, something I've never had before).

Now my logic suggests that th computer's difficulty must come from acessing the necessary bit of the hard disk in time (i.e it isn't stressed because there's too many things playing simultaneously, but too many options). Maybe the way this task is being handled is worse in L5?

God knows. Maybe I'm just rambling. VERY frustrating though as I LOVE Live and am loath to build a "simple" set because Live's performance is getting worse.

I'd gladly buy some more RAM, but I'm not confident that it will solve my problem

I have a set with over 500 scenes and 36 clips in each scene. I've tried hundreds of clips and follow actions going at once.

It works perfectly in 5, on both computers, as long as I don't do too much complex warping on the Powerbook. It's fine on the G5.

I know lots of people are having problems, but if it's any help, not everyone is having problems.

I'm hoping that gives everyone with problems some hope!

Don't give up!

well its good to know(or not good to know) that im not the only one having these problems, i've opened old sets and they hardly can play, and even when the cpu is at like 50% there is still dropouts for some reason...

well, im confident ableton will fix this soon!!

im on a pb1.33 768mbram

I actually put my buffer size lower and suddenly no glitches so I suggest anyone with drop outs glitches etc really set up the buffer and pluin buffer and audio card stuff even if you feel you know whats up.

I thought I knew but L5 is quite different reaction than L4 and I actually am doing better and with lower latency !

I think somebody mentioned about deleting old prefs - maybe beta test prefs or L4 prefs, and as above to reset audio hardware latency. But trashing old prefs may not suit you if you wanna use L4 as well as L5.

I used the demo of L5 last night for about 2 hours. After one hour it started acting up and all I did was mix whole tracks...

It's still cool compared to live 4 but I might just wait for a few more updates before buying it.
