Was a n00b with 8, now a n00b with 9...
Hi all,
I had just been getting started with 8, but it was then announced 9 would be coming soon -- so I figured I may as well wait and get started with 9 instead.
I believe 8 installed something like 2GB in the Library folder, whereas 9 installed just about nothing.
I see on the 9 download page it says: "The Live 9 Suite (Upgrade) installer comes with a core library, but to complete your library you'll need to choose the sounds and devices you want to install."
Am I supposed to use the "Packs" page to build the Library? Is there some reference that shows what was in the 8 Library if I want to recreate it for 9?
Thanks!

I uninstalled 8 before I installed 9 -- so the general premise now is that I start with an empty Library, and build it via the Packs page on the Ableton site?funken wrote:You're best probably re-downloading the packs. Are there not some in Place: Live 8 Library? Have you located that in Preferences?
Thanks, sorry to be asking such a simple question!

Oh no! I hope you did not delete any of your Ableton instrumet/effect presets. Don't delete your Live 8 library until you move those to your User Library of Live 9. However, IF you do not have any of your own presets, clips, etc in Live 8 then it should be no worry to just use the new Library and download all the packs from your account's Packs page. You see Live 8 stored your instrument/fx/racks/clips etc inside the Live 8 library (unless you put them somewhere else on your drive).turnstylenyc wrote:8funken wrote:You're best probably re-downloading the packs. oop, already deleted.jsn wrote:Oh no! I hope you did not delete any of your Ableton instrumet/effect presets. Don't delete your Live 8 library until you move those to your User Library of Live 9. I had the stuff that came with the 8 Suite install -- but I hadn't really done much, and decided to wait for 9 to dig into it.
But it's not clear to me if 9 is "expecting" that I have all the 8 stuff left over.
My intention was to start with a "clean slate" -- but if 9 is expecting the 8 stuff to still be there, then it seems I would have "less than a clean slate"?
PS: even though I uninstalled 8 and removed the 8 Library, after installing 9 I noticed that it still seemed to know my 8 settings and default template -- which seemed weird to me (I was expecting to be starting from scratch).
And my default template happened to have a simple drum beat, but the kit I used to make it is no longer in the Library, and so it doesn't play right.
What's the best way if I simply want to get rid of everything and start with a fresh install of 9 Suite? (Do "normal" first-time installations of 9 Suite now also start with an empty Library? Or is the upgrade installer different?)
Sorry, I thought it would be easier just to start from the beginning...

Oops
As a general rule, it's good to have a backup of Live libraries (yes, I understand it's a lot of drive space...but better safe than sorry later). So if you uninstalled Live 8 through the uninstaller provided I do not know why your template populates in Live 9 after install. I do not work with a "default" template. I like to keep that clean and if I then wish to load from the 'templates' I've stored then I select that project and open and save it as a new Project. Anyway, I do not believe Live 9 requires that you have your Live 8 installed. I believe it to be possible to install it from scratch without error. The Live 9 Library(s) is not organised in the same manner of the single Live 8 library. When I installed Live 9 Suite I only had content in what is referred to as "Core Library". These are the devices, clips, presets, etc which come native as part of a Live 9 Suite installation. ALL other packs you may have owned previously (or had downloaded for free) you will have to reinstall from the Packs section of YOUR account page on Ableton's website. Otherwise your Live 9 "User Library" is empty after installation. The way I understand it is that from now on any preset, clips, etc you save inside Live will appear in this Library and NOT the new "Core Library". I'm right in the middle of reading this huge manual again now so in another day or so I will have understood these new concepts. Not easy at first I know.

Thanks. I assume you also installed via the '9 upgrade' -- Is it also the case that the Library starts off empty when people instal 9 for the first time? (meaning, not an upgrade install)
eg:
* brand new user installs 8, gets a 2GB Library by default.
* brand new user installs 9, gets an empty Library by default.
Is that correct? Thanks again!

Well, I can't speak for a completely fresh install of the program, however I would assume the user would receive whatever comes with the Live 9 Core Library (for their version) with an empty User Library. There is a comparison chart on the Ableton website where one can see any other sounds instruments or packs available with a particular version. I purchased a Suite upgrade, yes. It is a bit of a juggle to figure out what to keep in the Live 8 library and what to do away with (because certain previously owned packs are in fact downloadable [and fully compatible] with the new Live 9 Libraries and application. What I've decided to do I think is to download all previously owned packs which I have in L8 library and then one by one Uninstall them from L8 livepack preferences window when I am sure they have been installed in L9. I have a backup of my L8 library on an external so if this comes back to haunt me I will be prepared.
For now it seems the wisest course of action in order to conserve the most disk space.

would it be possible to license a "usual" live 9 version with an upgrade license? i guess not, right?
well... i had the same problem. reinstalled the live 8 library, and there was drum machine and amp etc. in it. you could check if its install in your version.

I do seem to have the Suite instruments, etc. -- just not the stuff in the Library (so, for example, a simple beat I kept in my template seems to be missing its sounds). That said, if a fresh first-time 9 installation would now default the Library to empty, then that would be great to confirm.Fckthwrld wrote:would it be possible to license a "usual" live 9 version with an upgrade license? i guess not, right?

And, if so, I would then need to figure out which Packs to download to reproduce the Library I had with 8, as I think I understand it...
Re: Was a n00b with 8, now a n00b with 9...
well okay... i tried the same way as you, here are my final thoughts:
the suite demo (with everything) got exact the same size as the upgrade download. on every video on the net where someone installed the "pure" live 9 there is no other point in the browser (like live 9 library). i think that the live 8 library is more a "bonus" to import all of your old stuff. you should get along without it, but i reinstalled it, just to get sure i have everything to start.
edit: the library in 8 is not made out of "packs" i believe... there are the lessons and other misc stuff etc. in it. dont ask me what exactly it is, but it seems like its not made out of packs.
