OK I need this spelt out for me

I had Suite 8, installed on Win7 all good. I bought an upgrade to Live 9. I wanted to start on a clean sheet so to speak to before I downloaded Live 9 I wiped my laptop and installed Windows 8.

Live 9 wouldnt load on Windows 8, it kept coming up with the "side by side config" error. I downloaded the C++ Dist and applied all windows updates but it didnt work.

SO... I uninstalled Live 9 and installed suite 8 again and then reinstalled Live 9 and Live 9 now works! Great. Then I read I can deleted the program files for Live 8 so I did that and Live 9 still works.. awesome!

But now in the browser in Live 9 I can still see my Live 8 Library... do I still need this? I have no need for any sounds or anything I had before as I wanted to start with a brand new configuration, can I get rid of the Live 8 Library and is there any point in doing so?

I think its confusing as there are now two groove folders one in the Live 9 core library and one in the Live 8 Library..

I work in IT and this has gotta be one of the more annoying programs to install / upgrade I've seen lol... I do love Ableton for making music though

Any advice and help greatly appreciated

A lot of people were concerned that they'd lose their Live 8 library content when migrating to Live 9, so the library is being automatically imported when you install Live 9. You can safely delete the Live 8 library if you want to start with a blank slate.

Um, I thought it was LINKED , hence the setting for "location of L8 library"

If you delete it, that link points to nothing.

Correct - it is not an import, it is a linking. Be sure to think that through before deleting it, in general. I realize the OP said he wanted a blank slate, just wanted to reaffirm that it's not pulled in to the L9 browser.

ok Cheers guys... can anyone think of any reasons why it would be a bad idea to delete it instead of just leaving it?

Say for example (like me) you have some custom patches you use all the time, then its worth keeping the old library. I am a returning user with some saved tracks from a previous version so I had no library. To get my custom kicks, master channel patches, synth patches etc I had to load the old songs, and resave the patches in Live9. This is presuming you 'collect all and save' with your tracks, then this works, if not, don't think it will. Personally, hard drives are cheap, just keep the old library, why go through the potential trauma for no reason lol.

Reading your post again seems you had a clean install of 8 before putting on live 9 so you have no reason not to bin it as there wont be any old custom stuff anyway lol

Great thanks for the clarification... so just to confirm.... assuming I didnt have any custom presets, or old projects I wanted to use... I am not losing anything by deleting the Live 8 Library?

And to delete it.. I just find it on the hardrive and delete it.. and then remove the Link from the browser in Live 9?

Ah right now I'm totally confused!

Cheers for the input Peter but I've now got some more questions.

Basically I want a brand new install as if I've never made music before in my life.

I did want to use windows 8 but frankly this isn't important at all. I wiped my laptop and did a clean install of Live 9 standard (upgrade but live 8 wasnt installed) but it wouldn't load and just kept giving me the 'side by side config error' I tried installing C++ distrib and windows updates but it kept giving me the same error. Out of frustration I uninstalled and reinstalled live 9 ... Same error, I then installed Live 8 suite and then Live 9 upgrade and low and behold Live 9 then worked.

I can go back to Windows 7 if needs be that's not an issue but if I did do I have to install Live 8 suite at all? Can I just install Live 9 standard upgrade on its own and if so will I have all my instruments from suite 8 like analog etc?

Surely gotta be the most complicated software to install I've ever seen and I install servers and enterprise applications for a living lol

Ah brilliant Peter thanks for your help here.

The error I was getting was this one described here https://www.ableton.com/en/articles/sidebyside/

I followed the instructions but it still didn't work. BUT what I'm now wondering is this.. in the article it says download the C++ Distribution for the OS you are using 32bit or 64bit. So as I was suing Windows 8 64bit that's the one I downloaded but I am using the 32bit version of Live.. wonder if that was why it still wasn't working.

It wasn't the installer as because their servers were being hammered on release day I left it till the next day to download.

I agree with your comment on the new library though, having a separate User library is definitely the way forward.

I think I am going to wipe the laptop again and try again... I'm not desperate to use it right away and I really wanted to start a fresh with a brand new "clean" and shiny installation so I don't mind messing around until it works the way it should.

Because your version of Live 9 is an upgrade, it would make sense that the software needs to see a licensed version of Live 8 in order to install successfully.

Just to update the thread and to say thanks again.

Clean install of Win8 64bit, installed the 32bit Version of the C++ Dist and installed Live 9 32bit (without pre installing 8 ) and all works like a charm!

Maybe I'll remember to read the instructions properly next time
