I would recommend to wait a couple of days and test live9 before you start to merge/delete stuff.

no need to merge/combine...

in Preferences>Library Location of Live 8 Library browse for it

that's it, your Live 8 library will appear under PLACES in the browser

i much prefer the new browser

The bad news, OP, is that *there is no way to merge them*.

I know this from months of beta testing and repeatedly addressing this issue. All they did was allow Live 9 to "see" your live 8 library.

Which means grabbing old stuff from 8's library, saving new stuff in 9's library, etc. Basically using two totally seperate locations for content.....yes, it's stupid.

You, can, however, manually move a bunch of content from 8's into 9's -- but COPY, not MOVE it, or you'll hate life later, most likely.

Note, however, that file paths to samples for things like Drum Racks, Simpler & Sampler do NOT update when you save those instruments/racks inside your Live 9 library after copying them from 8's -- meaning, whatever file path the instrument in your 8 library uses to find the samples it needs, it STILL uses it even once the instrument is stored in Live 9's library (this is what I mean by 'no true way to merge') so if you later delete the sample content from your live 8 library (or delete the whole thing), all your 'made in 8' instruments won't be able to find the samples they use, even though the instruments themselves are now saved in 9's library.

It's confusing, to say the least, and I'm still frankly shocked they couldn't find a way to do a better job of it. Explanations all have to do with the new Browser and the fact that Live 9 doesn't copy all content into it's own library the way all the previous versions did -- it references the files at their original location, and/or saves copies into the Project / Session folder (when told to by the user), rather than into a global library.

good luck!

Yeah. I've not been looking forward to manually shuffling things around to do some cleanup when I'm bored, but there's worse things.

It does seem like they're finally moving to a better/more flexible way of doing things that means this sort of thing won't be necessary once it's been done this last time.

Hey, a related question, is there any way to get rid of the old live 8 suite packs that are replaced in live 9 suite ? I mean things like "orchestral strings" etc. They do take a lot of space on my (small) disk and I don't need to have the old version if I'm installing the newer one...
Thanks !

You can rid of them but any old projects with those files will say the files are missing. You will then either have to manually link those files to the new ones in L9 packs (which there is no auto linking for some bizarre reason) or drop in the equivalent instrument from the new packs.

This is ridiculous. If there is some technical reason for keeping two libraries then I'd be interested to know, but so be it.

But I see no reason, whatsoever, why we cannot have both incorporated into the main browser.

This just feels cheap and disjointed - certainly not something that particular effort was put into.

If you want to uninstall Live 8 Packs, then open Live 8, and go to Preferences->Library.

Here is a youtube video that goes through the process of moving your Live 8 library to Live 9.

remember that your old livesets might have broken sample references if you do that.
