What's up with OIC?

Post by oneummon » Wed Mar 06, 2013 2:09 pm

It's an old library but still can't find proper audio demos, info of articulations etc. Is it so outdated that it's scary to witness in 2013?
It would be the only reason to go for the Suite as opposed to default one.

Would be nice to hear opinions of people who have experienced the sound of recent orch libraries like Spitfire...I'm not expecting it to sound like pro ones but I'm not interested to waste my HD space either.

Thanks for the links. Overall quality is a bit mediocre but I guess most Live users are happy with them, so that's good for you :)

Ok, I try to be more specific. The sound quality itself is fine although this is also just an opinion and I understand some prefer more dry approach on sound, but I could live with that ambience of recording.

The thing I don't like is the lack of necessary articulations in strings if you're writing anything else than simple pop/disco arrangements. I'd also like to have a control over the individual samples but multi-sample mode doesn't allow for that.

What do I like is the dark tonal character of woodwind ensemble.

Aside the quality, SoniVox product is in pricewise (2,999 dollars) and in quantity a whole different beast than the set you get with suite. Maybe Ableton could update the oic by giving some extra layers and articulations for the strings?

As I said, I think it's great deal for many and cheap way to get compact set of basic orchestra tools :)

ah, articulatons...one can't have enough of them...right ;)
but you get solo instruments with OIC, and that is something that you don't get with most of the "modern" libraries.
They are all (Albion 123, Symphobia, Orchestral essentials and alike) more/less all section-oriented, and from time to time you still need a solo flute or oboe.
EWQLSO does have solo's and articulation wise is broader, but soon you'll stuck with the limitations of the hall that samples are recorded at.
Kirk Hunter's Diamond has solo's too, and is recorded dry, but sound wise is a really specific. VSL is an never ending story of getting more. IRCAM has nice articulations not found elsewhere.

get the point?

Blending those beasts is the only way to get around to achieve variety in composing with midi.
OIC is just a brick, and you can't expect from a brick to become a house.

All the best!

I hear your point - and it is a good point, blending libraries will bring some nice tonal surprises. You never know.

In the end I still might upgrade to suite just for the sound of ww ens. And maybe the layering approch squeezes something more from the library. That would be all plus :)
