5400 vs 7200Hd 8Mb vs 16Mb read´n write adwise please

I want to put a second Hd into my toshiba, using the style bay adaptor.

2 models wich I would choose are:

A Toshiba MK6026GAX 5400rpm with 16Mb cache for 95 euros.
A Hitachi TRAVELSTAR 7K100 7200rpm with 8Mb cache for 150 Euros.

I know that the read only speed difference is not that big, but I would know your opinions especially how big is the difference when reading a few clips and decoding mp3´s in the background, wich takes too long for now with the 4200rpm Hd.
Do I have any benefits having 16 Mb cache instead of 8 Mb using Live.

I remember Adam testing these and due to that 16 Mb Toshiba was almost as fast reading. It all depend on music you do, tracks amount and size. You can get the 80G Toshibas, I ordered one, but they were out of stock so got the 7200 Hitachi.

My laptop has two Hitachi ATA100 7200 RPM drives, and I absolutely swear by them. I can stream 50-100 tracks of 24-bit audio from these drives, and Live peforms extremely well on my laptop.

I read a post this morning that said that SATA 5400 RPM drives are supposed to perform better than 7200 ATA100 drives. I don't know how much I believe that, but you might want to research the benchmarks. From what I've read on TomsHardware.com, these Hitachi drives are, and have been for over a year, the fastest drives for laptops. They have the fastest seek times and the hightest throughput. My laptop performs as good as my desktop with 8mb cache western digital ATA100 7200 rpm drives.

The ONLY drawback is that the drives run hot, and they take a lot of energy to run. So if you're looking at true mobility, you'll have issues. I can get maybe 45-60 minutes of use out of my laptop. But then again, I didn't get my 12 lbs beast to run MS Word on long airplane trips

Having said that, the drives are quiet. However the fan in your system might run more due to the heat.

I've had both the 60GB 7200rpm Travelstar and the 100GB Seagate Momentus 5400rpm drives in my laptop, and the biggest difference I noticed was that the Seagate drive was much quieter. The biggest diff with performance I saw was I had to wait a bit longer to load projects, but other than that I never ran into streaming problems, even on tracks with 10 or so 24bit/44.1kHz audio tracks. I guess if you run more tracks, you might wanna research the performance differences more.

BTW, I'm about to buy a new laptop entirely, and the store I am dealing with said to wait a bit, the new Seagate 7200rpm 100GB Momentus is going to be available in about a week, so says their vendor. I been loving my Seagates, in both my desktop and laptop. The 5-year warranty is nice too!

thanx for your input.

I´ll go the travelstar route, it´s medium price and I think in read´n write modus it´s the fastest option.

I´ve looked for the momentus 80 Gb, well over 200 euros is a bit too much I think.

7200/tm is faster

if you make streaming choose a 7200 t/m
