Sidechain, EQ or neither???

I'm having trouble deciding whether or not to side chain or EQ my bassline and kick (or vice versa). My bassline and kick start the same notes on the first 2 kicks but after that the kick hits in btw the bassline. I've tried both ways and even listened to it through my headphones, truck system, and home stereo but still cannot decide. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.
