After buying Live the final version on the evening it came out, I had two two days free time which I wanted to devote to do some intensive Live 5 exploration.
The first day I had to make some scetches for some new tracks for an upcoming album. This is where Live really excelled and where I used it before in version 4. The workflow of it is really fast and your imagination is the only boundary. Also the effects are really great and inspiring! Great stuff! So far so good....
The second day was a more production oriented thing which incorporated some vocal and rhodes recording. Since the original files for these recordings where versions for a live gig done in Live 4, I decided to to the recording all in Live 5.
Well, that didn't work out that great unfortunately. I had two crashes of Live which also made my (often saved) versions of the songs unusable. Live 5 couldn't open them anymore without crashing!!!!!
The first crash appeared after a vocal overdub. I stopped after the recording and couldn't save anymore because Live said it couldn't save while recording while I stopped the recording process! The only way to stop was quitting without saving. But since I save after practically every edit I do I thought I could revert to the last version. WRONG! Live couldn't open the file anymore without crashing. I had to do it all over again. Luckily there was still the sounds folder off that song with the last recordings, so I could fit it pretty quick.
Then when I started to add some plug-ins after adding a waves plug-in, Live crashed once again (but hey, a Waves plug-in, that's for sure crashing :-)) but also delivered a unusable Live file. This time it was very unfortunate since I was deep into mixing and did a lot of editing, automation and stuff, so it was sad to experience this. I figured out how to get this file working again (trash Live prefs, disabling the Waves shell, then the file started again without crashing), and could go on after removing the offensive plug-in......
The point is, this happened on some free time on some not so important projects, but.....I do a lot of production stuff for a living and this cannot happen for some real projects!!!!! I have the habit to save a lot and do backups and stuff so that should be OK. But it's getting nasty when a program crashes on you and leaves you with a unusable file!
I thought I share this on the forum, my crash report of the second crash will go to Ableton, but people, be warned!
I really love the program and find it very inspriring and it get's better and better but I also have to trust it for 100 % (oh no, it's software, for 95%...) and I think a little work should be done here.
