Live 9 is great...BUT.......
Live 9 is great...BUT.......
IMHO, Ableton could have just realeased Push to work w/ Live 8 and it would have been fine.
The changes are not so monumental in L9 to really separate it astronomically from L8.
Audio-Harmony-Melody to Midi is dope, but could have been an update. I do like the new browser, and alot of the new packs are killer...
But if I wasn't already a Suite 8 customer w/ great discount (thanks Ableton!), I'd advise newbies to get L8 and wait for L9 to go on sale.
Hopefully Push will be dope enough to make me change my mind. If it does, I'll come back and recant this...
Again...MHO

I am just bitter they still haven't fixed PDC to be honest. I would have paid the upgrade price just for this update on its own.
Anyway, I agree with you, the software updates from Live 8 to Live 9 aren't very exciting. Push is the exciting bit, and that's not part of the upgrade, it's something else to pay for.

lmfao for real.
I've stated the OP's sentiment many times but feel that Push looks like loads of fun. usually the upgrade is around $150-ish give or take. with Push it's like $750. surprise surprise, now I wait and save some money.

Can you know how much needed changing to do what they wanted to do with Push?fifedawg wrote:IMHO, Ableton could have just realeased Push to work w/ Live 8 and it would have been fine.
Re: Live 9 is great...BUT.......
All the little upgrades definitely add up to a major update.
This is definitely not Live 8. I am curious though about what future tweaks they have in store for Live 9. It seems like the recording into armed blank slots in Session View is a biggie. It seems like it disrupts a lot of people's flow, yet I can see why it works the way it does (single button for making clips is pretty bad ass)
But from small workflow upgrades, midi editing functionality, an overhauled browser with new form of organization. Improved Drum Rack control. Session automation record. Their constant efforts, version by version to upgrade their Compressors and EQ. The convert to midi feature may be a brand new feature, but it is small stuff in the grand scheme.
I don't know if 8 was a huge update from 7, I mean, yeah, new instruments and fx, but what about the actual program itself? 9 is pretty crazy.

Re: Live 9 is great...BUT.......
As we weren't on the development team, I couldn't speculate. But to incorporate a basic midi controller that has viewer window that accesses a basic folder structure and python/max4live integration, a ground up rebuild technically wasn't necessary. People have been doing this all along with their controllers and python could have easily directed a visual display to a folder structure. The necessity of the rebuild appears from live wanting to simplify their organization mechanics more than anything. It appears to be overall a work flow upgrade more than anything. Honestly my benefit I have found in live 9 trial is from reduced time sifting through samples. Haven't tried any VSTs though on this computer yet though, so it remains to see how long the honeymoon lasts.

dude, session automation! That alone is worth it, its a total game changer for live performance and production. Plus all the more subtle changes to the LOM that are required to monitor say the drum rack slots. Live 8 just wont cut it.
Re: Live 9 is great...BUT.......
Live 9 is not great... Switching between 8 and 9 it's like heaven and hell experience... Already uninstalled 9 from my iMac... On my MBP opening projects takes long time and even somehow it lost connection with my external soundcard (No Audio Available...) during rehearsal... I had to restart MBP. Maybe it's other fault, but it happened for first time running Live 9... Project created in Live 9 (sucker!) not openning in 8. And I have "a gig" tomorrow... No time to switch right now.
I'm really disappointed...
Waiting for 9.0.2 with all bugs fixed...

I think this is the best upgrade in a long time. The app is much much more stable than Live 8 when it was released which promise a bright future. I agree that Push is the most excitingbit but actually clip automation and audio to midi have already completely transformed the way I compose music. Didn't have a crash once which doesn't happen to me with Live 8.
Re: Live 9 is great...BUT.......
Been trying the demo of 9, not much there for me over 8 so I doubt I'll upgrade.

No crushes since upgrading. Despite that 9th edition always opens with 15 seconds with rainbow spinning wheel.
Never happened with 8.
In browser Live 9 doesn't see recently added (created) .wav files in the folder with wave files.
Files are there. I can add them through Finder...
Never happened with 8.
And that global latency... Adding effect, instrument or audio file cause spinning wheel.
It's bullshit!
Running Lion on i7 2,9GHz MBP (2012)...
Live 8 works perfect...
