I would guess it's because the automation curves are not delayed whereas the audio coming from the plugin is delayed? So the curve is earlier than the waveform it is meant to automate? That's the only think I can think of - but maybe it's too simplistic?

to compensate delays, you delay the fastest ones until they match the slowest ones. but automation isn't delayed at all.
