I confess: I'm an old fart...
All I see in that Herrmutt video is that playing live ("not fake" according to OP...) doesn't help of not being boring...
Actually it's boooooring as hellll...
Just another one hipster act (IMHO, as you, "hip people", usually express it...).
Time for my whisky...
Skål!

You are old farts? No problem I respect you.
You feel bored ? No problem, drop some link of interesting live electronic music, I should like it.
Hypster ? You are wrong, you are probably more hypster than us and I don't blame you for this.
We are seeking for solution to play retroactive music in real time that's all. Cause we have to break our habits.
What is a hypster to you?

@ Vresky what you're doing is definetly skilled playing, taking scratch style fader moves to trigger samples,
fellow music makers will ooooh and aaaah but a bunch of gig goes wont be able to see whats on the table,
they will see two people mildly nodding their heads. Kraftwerks recent shows in London were describes as four guys with minibars. Iconic performers have danced gyrated and humped their way around a stage to express their enthusiasm for the music. even the annoying vegan from coldplay has tried that. as live performers we all need to think about the show, music is only part of the show. with max/msp and microsoft kinect and arduino's, there is no reason why ableton shows have to look so static. visuals can definetly add to a show

Thank you
We always ask for cameras and video projector in order to let the audience see what's happening, mostly arround hands. Since we do that crowd is more reactive.
Another good point : if we make mistake they can see we do our best... And they encourage us!

Re: fake/boring live set?
Personally, im not quite sure that technology is where it needs to be yet for ‘live’ electronic artists to be a constant reality. Sure people do it, but typically the more someone tries to do things ‘live’ the more stripped down and boring the music sounds. Either way, a lot of pre-programmed elements are still necessary to make it sound like modern electronic music. Even a rehearsed button mashing exercise is pre-programmed and reliant on existing music.
Now there are exceptions and I think we are getting closer to it becoming more of a reality. Some people are starting to come up with true live performance’s that actually sound fully fleshed out. Beardyman does it well I think, and his new Beardytron has potential to be innovative. These types of software enhancements will make live generative electronic music more accessible to the public without having to be a software/hardware expert.
When you think about it though the idea of electronic music fully generated live is rather new. Years past it was restricted and required a lot of good hardware. People did (and still do) DJ performances because that was/is the best way to perform production quality music live. Plus it avoids double work; unless you produce the same way you play live you are leading double life that is far more intensive than improving a DJ skill.
In the end it’s going to take time for people to evolve with the proper tools to make it commonplace. Yet, even pop/rock/etc artists are more interested in ‘putting on a good show’ than ‘playing at their very best’. So even with these possibilities live electronic music will probably still take a backseat to the ‘show’ aspect of things.

Re: fake/boring live set?
Its interesting to notice than the sequencer ( mechanical ones ) is older than electronic music.
In the other hand first electronic instrument was real time instrument.
I can tel than playing live whitout loops or baking traks is really enjoying and the audience feel the difference.

Re: fake/boring live set?
trying to do live electronic music is like playing punk rock.
you do it for the love and because it is what you want to do.
if people like it.. awesome! you win
if people don't like it.. who cares..
some will like it and other wont
that is just the way it is.
their is no everyone like one thing group, people are actually diversified.
think of all the music that sucks
people like that crap.
so what.. no need to fake just do what you love.
well unless it is about money.
you know.. i don't care who you are, how good people think you are
if I don't like it, I just don't like it.. so what they make more money then me
good for them.. i'm actually happy for them.. doesn't mean i need to copy them.

Re: fake/boring live set?
I think as a performer, this whole live/not live -thing is just a personal decision you'll have to take at some point.
We all know, there are way too many acts out there, that just hit play.
We all know, the Audience, or Big parts of the audience wont notice or care.
There is no right or wrong way to perform music, in such a scenario.
I mean, i'm asking myself very often, why the hell i'm trying to actually play as much stuff as possible in a live situation, if noone can tell the difference.
But then the answer i found for myself is very simple. I just really don't like beeing on stage without doing anything. It doesn't feel right. But that's just my point of view.
If it's ok for them to pretend doing things when they're not, it's their decission.
It wont make a difference. Noone cares.
