yup, and the improvement in the mini range is even less exciting than the yawn-esque ibook tune-up. really makes me wonder how they plan to stay above water until the intel switch.

why should we?
apple first has to come up with a G5 powerbook before I switch to apple talk..

apple is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay behind on the laptop market..
and now what? they squeezed the last out of the g4 processor and stuffed it into the ibook as well.. shame on them...
I would advice everyone not to buy an ibook or powerbook at the moment..
waste of money imho..

i don't think that the ibook update is that laughable honestly

they also now have 512MB standard, not to mention a 33mhz faster FSB and ram.
no it isn't huge, but i think they pushed it as far as possible without cramping the powerbook's style which happened in the revision before this. Faster video cards as well.

i also noticed you can downgrade the 14" $1299 1.42ghz ibook to a combo drive for $100 less. and a 1.42ghz 14" 512mb, 60gb ibook for $1199 is probably the best buy you could make for an Apple laptop right now.

If someone needs/wants an Apple laptop, then they should buy one. There's no reason to not recommend them to anyone. The intel switch is going to take a while, and its going to be extremely gradual.

But then again, what do i know? i sold a G4 12" 867mhz powerbook and bought a AMD64 3700+ laptop with 1.5GB Ram. Then sold it and bought a G4 12" 1.5ghz powerbook. It isn't like i have perspective or anything.

I'm thinking about buying me a mac mini (1.42 - 512 RAM) and a regular 17" TFT.

I have an acer laptop (2600XP - 512 MB (shared) ram) now which does perform very well on ableton stuff (29% on the performance test). But there's a lot of interesting (looking) software out there that only runs on mac (I'm a webdesigner too). So with this little mac mini I could have access to that software + see if that mac os thing is really that good before buying a real mac

It also seems the mac mini runs really quiet. Is this true? Because my laptop is now heating up like crazy while making loud noises.

I have an iMac, and even that doesn't do very well with VI's... Mac's just don't seem to have much horsepower... and even a double processor doesn't help much with LIVE since it's not multi-threaded....

Yeh it's a good idea in principle... but someone else mentioned here t'other day that mac mini has no audio in... so unless you've already got an external soundcard you'd have to get one of those too.

I probably have less perspective than Adamjay as I'm a blinkered apple geek, but I think that point alone is a tricky one with the macmini if basic sound is what you wanna do. I mean it isn't exactly gonna kill them to put a 1/8" mic socket on the damn thing. There's plenty of blank white space just waiting for a nice gold socket...

It has a simple line out, right? I have an m-audio quattro (usb). So that's no problem. But I don't like to put in the quattro for listening to mp3 or so. On my laptop now I use the crappy onboard soundcard for some testing some basic ideas and so.

So actually the mac mini would be used for...
- mail & surfing
- web development (actually just a good editor - bbedit, finally is needed)
- simple audio tasks (just when an idea pops up I'd like to launch my live or bidule and hit the buttons)

The pc laptop is for cpu intensive audio tasks (and audiomulch).

Best of both worlds. And an ideal price to wait for the intelmacs.

There was a thread on here about wireless networking midi between pc and mac, someone else was trying it. So you could maybe have macmini and your pc laptop running together, Garageband on the mini and Live on the PC! Yeh macmin has a line out so that's ok.
