Syncing two copies of live - nearest whole number bpm?

Post by Kormac » Thu Apr 04, 2013 3:00 pm

Hi there.

I'm currently syncing two copies of live (both on MBP laptops) over a wireless network. They're syncing fine although there are slight fluctuations in the BPM as usual. This wasn't a problem until we starting doing live vocal looping on one of the machines. As the BPM changes slightly on this machine, the pitch of the vocal goes up and down rendering the whole process pretty useless.

To simplify:

Machine A - Master - controls BPM and runs drums.

Machine B - Slave - reads BPM from A. Runs Looper which is recording live vocal loops. Pitch varies.

I'm wondering is there a way that Machine B could round the BPM off to the nearest whole number (i.e. 170BPM instead of 169.95 or 170.07 etc?) This way the vocal would stay at it's original pitch.

Would there be a Max patch or other program that could help achieve this?

Any help on this matter would be much appreciated

Best

I have tryed the same configuration.( 2 apple laptop) Same results. I have not found the solution. Looper have no preferences, and " warp" automatically with pitch when you sync two computers.
The only way is looping with clips, with a new configuration.
I think Chapelier Fou ( I admire so much his work) work like this, without Looper. But I dont know his configuration...( I would like! ; ).

Normally M4L can be used to control BPM, but it doesn't work if Live is synced to midi clock.

Probably not the solution you're looking for, but have you considered using different warp modes like complex pro. It may introduce a few artifacts, but surely better than being out of tune.

Edit: Sorry, live vocals? Surely this shouldn't be repitched by bpm, should it?

Andy, it does if it's using looper.

Thanks all for replies. Might have to be the clips then....

this just highlights where ableton needs to move. Right now, live has effectively 3 different kinds of samplers, each with their own benefits and limitations. There is the flexible sampler instrument, with a wide variety of tweakability and playability, but lacking any timestretching capabilities. Then there is the looper, with useful recording capabilities, but no timestretching and little playability. Finally, there is lives clipslot engine, which does timestretch, and offers its own set of tweaks, however, is not as immediately playable as is sampler. Live needs to combine these approaches together, and introduce the features of sampler and looper into the clip engine itself.

try over wired network or midi cable. my experience with wireless is that the jitter is just too big.
