Mapping MPD 32 and Live 8

Post by tteo » Sun Apr 07, 2013 9:27 am

I have mapped all MPD 32 pads in 4 vertical by 4 trax/channel on Live 8 in that way I have 16 mapped clips by 4 diff. tracks.. So 4 trax with 16 clips each.. each of the 16clips on each of the 4 tx correspond to a single track I have chopped up to be able to play/re-arrange them 'live'....

Since I have more clips for other trax chopped up I need to find a way to switch them/replace them with the ones i have used up in the middle of my sets I have the UC-33 too so wonder if i can map knob to scroll down the Live session window ?

Any tips and suggestions apreciated !!

I think there are scripts floating around that let you use MPDs like an APC (a 4x4 border around clips which you can move all around).

I don't feel like searching. I'd type 'mpd 32 script' or something.

Otherwise, some other options are:

1. Instead of clips, use a drum rack. I admit that this could be living dangerously if you rely on time stretching and looping.

2. Look up how to change 'midi channel' on your controller. If you are on 1, and you used up all the pads, switch to 2. You'll see that you suddenly have a whole new set of pads to map to :)

your option #2 is The Tip ! Using up all available midi-channels would give me more pads than i'd need i think !

drum rack is reat , i will work on using it in a live setting too.. I dont necessarily rely on time stretching, off beats nice too ahah

THANX MUCHO :)

thinking of #2, but then I would need to go on edit mode for each pad and each time i'd want to switch ea/ pad to a diff. midi channel, no ? .. might be inconvenient to do on stage even if tot. possible, thanx ;)

There should be a Global Channel change parameter.

In most cases, what they have is a channel 0 for the pads/faders to follow on with te Global parameter, and then there is the option of designating a specific channel to any that you want to consistently stay on one specific channel.

Another option is making new presets that each have unique channels. But if you can change global channel, you might not need to bother with multiple presets.

Right, was actually trying to understand what that does, Global Channel !

Thanx for this help, sorry if its basics, am only on my first month using it steadily :)

BTW : Drum Rack works great for doing what I was tryna, thanx ! Can map a whole lot of paramaters AND in just one track I can have a ton of sounds I could easily do a show just making noises like that , sweeeeet !

The nice thing about the drum rack is, you can have a few drum racks in one set. And just switch to a different drum rack for a whole new setup of sounds.

Another cool thing about drum racks is that you can record a midi clip of yourself triggering sounds. And then loop it, and play more and also record automations.

If you have any other questions, just pop em onto the forum :)

Sorry for typos... "Drum rack IS GREAT but I was away.... "

for setting up interesting, improv like ways to play your own stuff (or whichever sounds really..) in tot. unpredictable ways , it might not get better than that if you have ''just'' Ableton and controllers so thanx for the tip yo :)
