How to tune the oscillators on Operator using fine control?

Ok, I thought I had used some maths to work out what fine control numbers I need to use to get various semi tones.

For example. I thought I could get a minor third interval by using the fine knob set to 189, and it sounds ok. but today I found the 'Minor 7th Chord Lead' preset and it uses the fine control set to 201.

So, which is the right way to do it, or does the preset use a non standard tuning?

Aside from math, listening is another good practice.

Someone might just prefer one slightness over another. With synths you have the option of deciding the amount of detunedness etc. or how smoothly it sounds. As long as it is within the ballpark for being called that interval. Especially how it sounds.

In fact I did make a spreadsheet to work out the tunings, as I found out about Cent tuning also, but I think my math is slightly off as I'm pretty sure that a perfect 5th should should be a 500 fine setting while my math give me 498:

Semitones Cents Fine (Operator)
Unison = 0 0 0
Minor 2nd = 1 100 59
Major 2nd = 2 200 122
Minor 3rd = 3 300 189
Major 3rd = 4 400 260
Perfect 4th = 5 500 335
Tritone = 6 600 414
Perfect 5th = 7 700 498
Minor 6th = 8 800 587
Major 6th = 9 900 682
Minor 7th = 10 1000 782
Major 7th = 11 1100 888
Octave 12 1200 1,000

Still it sounds ok, so I'm going to stick with it for now and I can always change the values later on if I need to.

Hell yeah, nice work. I just go by ear as I do not have the patience for basic math. But I only quit smoking weed six months ago so maybe there's still hope for me...

I didn't look at your chart in detail before.

I haven't messed with cents lately, but I vaguely recall that 500 is a fifth? And It worked at a curve. I'm not positive since I don't have it in front of me to recall.

Another thing to keep in mind on Operator is that the Course knob will work in Overtones. And Cents is relative to whatever course setting you have, plus of minus an Octave.

What is even more tricky is how perfect overtones are different from our tempered scale tones.

Just some things to consider. Have you looked tunings and 'cents' up on google/wiki/etc?

Thanks bro, and your math is correct, I also calculated and got same results. :)
A=2^(1/12) (1,059463094)
Fine=1000*((A ^ semitone) - 1)

And Perfect fifth 498 is correct, :wink: , it is called "perfect" but not exactly perfect (harmonic matchings are sligthly off) that creates a great unison effect, same true for Perfect 4th, other intervals are more off by harmonics matchings.
