Drum rack mapping

Post by n2design » Sun Apr 21, 2013 6:49 am

When I drop kits onto a drum rack they all drop on c1 even though I drag and dropped the kit onto e2. Any idea why its reverting back to c1?

Kits don't drop onto a particular pad - they cover a bunch of pads in a GM drum mapping (which generally has a kick on C1 as the lowest drum, which is I guess what you mean). They all follow the same or very similar mappings, so you can decide halfway through writing a tune to change the kit and a kick will still be a kick etc - you won't suddenly have a snare where your kick should be.

If you want to map it yourself you can always drag individual sounds around the rack, or import the drum hits separately (I usually do this because I build kits out of samples that don't come with Ableton, but I still stick to the GM drum mapping).

Thanks for the info!
Doesn't seem to be anyway to [shift+click] to select more than 1 pad in the drum rack at a time. What a PITA to move each sample 1 at a time.

I actually just figured out how to do this. For the last few years I was doing what you mentioned... and you're right it's a PITA...

However, if you expand the "show/hide devices" of drum rack you can drag an entire drum rack into the existing drum rack by dropping the new drum rack into the area that says "drag instrument or blah blah here".

Assuming the drum rack you are importing to has the Pads/Cells open, those pads/cells from the drum rack you are importing from will "fill in"...

Not sure if I articulated that very well via written instructions.

Edit: Felt saucy. Went ahead and took a screen capture. Please let me know if this helps!
