Ableton routing/live set up/headhpone mix help needed!

Post by krautrock » Wed May 01, 2013 7:43 pm

Ok, freaking out a bit here with an upcoming gig....

I need to find a way to get a full headphone mix to my phones onstage (which are vital in terms of helping me hear everything).
I've a Motu Ultralite soundcard. I have all the tracks you see below either going to 'DrumSub' 5/6 out or 'SynthSub'1/2 out.
The lead vocals ('vox live') basically come into Ableton to an fx rack, then out of the soundcard to output 4.

I just cannot figure out a way of getting everything into the phones (which are going into the headphone input of the Motu) - it's either ONLY DrumSub, SynthSub or lead vocals.
Much appreciated if anyone can help me through this please!

First off - I'm assuming that you need to have your various channels going to separate outputs as you describe. If that's not the case, the easiest thing would be to route everything to a single pair of outputs on your Ultralite, and then make sure that the headphones are monitoring that out put pair - you'd use the MOTU CueMix software to do that.

So, assuming the easy way isn't going to work for you - why not use a send in Ableton to create a headphone mix independent of all your assigned track outputs, and then monitor that? For instance, create a 3rd Return track, which will also give you a Send C knob on all your channels. Turn that Send C knob up on all the channels you want to monitor, and then assign the output of Return C to some output pair on your Ultralite. Then you'll need to go into the CueMix software, and make sure that the headphone jack on your Ultralite is monitoring your chosen output pair.

Yes, no easy way for me unfortunately. :(
Ok, so I can use one of the return tracks I already have there, right? (I'm not using either one) ...

I'll try this now, fingers crossed I get somewhere. Don't go anywhere for the next 15 minutes please!

I would have made the same advice : there must be a solution with sends.
But maybe it's doable in CueMix ? (i don't own any motu)

Ok, so clearly I panic too soon... Does this look correct below? I have the Return track going into output '10'... not the headphone input on the front of the Motu as I wanted, but this is fine too I guess.
I haven't had to even go into CueMix - should that worry me?! Or should it be "if it aint broke, don't fix it..."

Consider using the sends on your sub tracks. Much less to fiddle with in a live situation.
