Hi Bud :D

Set your keyboard up in preferences to send midi out to Lives plug in devices

Press any key or turn a knob on your keyboard.
On n the top right of Live screen, you will see a brief flash, this is the midi receive indicator

if all is well, you're good to go!! :D

Here is a couple of screenshots for you,as a guide

Quick tip ,go to the view section, and make sure info is ticked, this will then give you a brief descriptionof what your pointing too
Very handy as your starting out,but more detail can be had in the manual as well

hey David thanks for your reply, i believe my current preferences are set right, i can here sounds when i play them in the instruments(drum rack, analog, tension, operator)
im just trying to use my impulse as an actual piano keyboard playing CDEFGAB, flats, sharps, chords and all that.

Unless I'm missing something, all I've known impulse for is an 8 cell drum rack sort of thing. There is no real keyboard/piano playing abilities (that I know of) in it. You could potentially load up 8 of your own piano sounds in it and play those, but you are of course limited to those eight sounds.

Using another instrument like you have, tension, analog, and such, will let you play chords and melodies provided you have the correct number of voices/polyphony enabled!

All I have seen impulse used for is a replacement/substitute for drum rack, I've never seen it being used in a strictly melodic sense.
