that functionality works just fine here in 5.0.1 on OS 10.4.2
Hmmm, on XP it's a double click to do this I just realized....

i think you've just addicted to fouth type version...
i thought so as well when i've just tried it but after a week of work i understood the new features of it! 8)
In and of itself, it is fine. It allows more organized handling of presets, etc. I think most Live users who have been performing with Live before version 5 are upset not at the browser itself, but that Ableton took away the old way of working with presets right on the effect/instrument, and put everything into the browser. Now, if you were to gig with 5, you couldn't see what preset any effect or instrument is on just by looking at the device, and you can't instantly change the preset on the device with one click and release on the device's preset pop up box. With 5, you have NO IDEA what preset any device is on, and to change presets, you have to open up the browser, possibly expand it to see all the folders-within-folders, scroll around to find the correct device/preset, then finally drag it over to the proper track and device. This is WAY more time consuming and circuitous, and NOT helpful at all on stage. I think most all live performers just want our presets back on the devices, there's several threads about it on these forums. The browser is cool, it should stay, we just want the ease of use and on-stage friendliness of the old scenario re-instated.

I agree with the above, the browser is good and improving - but having the presets on the plugin too would be best. There's space and a valid reason for it being there.

I would like the browser to include:

creation dates / change dates of files
sort by (date, name , size)
give more favourites options - 3 is too few
separate out VSTi and VST - I have a loooong list of plugins

If ableton want to put more of Lives control into the browser they could do with being a bit more adventurous about it!

allow us to filter out some info please! there's so much displayed in there it is overpowering.

I would like to display just what I need for each situation in there - for a particular song that might be : 3 VSTi , 5 VST effects and 4 different folders of samples ... then save that browse as a 'user browse set'

i think it would be nice if the help window was used to display info about the files when they are selected: date of creation, sample rate/bit rate, original folder (useful for searches), size, and for sets: number of tracks/scenes/clips, and so on.
that would be very useful me thinks.

I just wish it had a few more folder choices and a key command to open and close it, apart from that it works just fine for me.
I guess windows doesn't let you then? OK that explains it, I understand now, sorry, not trying to sound patronizing, I don't use PC's enough to know. Also I didn't consider that Live sort of adjusts the clip to tempo as well.
I have to agree with the sentiment about the presets in the browser, it's highly de-evolutionary in practice IMO. The only thing I can think is it must have been a concession in order to group the bundled settings with regular presets? :?

supster wrote:well, i cant say that it sucks, thats kind of harsh. its pretty nice in theory. but

1 - doubleclicking a preset in the browser doesnt load the preset into an existing plug. it opens up a new instance of the plug next to your existing one ...

?

2 - i agree with the people that are saying the original method of using the dropdown menu on the live plug is faster and more intuitive for live performane.

instead they took it out of the live plugins and replace it with the new method instead of leaving it and adding the new way. which is slower , clumsier, and because of point #1 .. doesnt work

3 - its version 5 and we still have no hotkey or midi control to open and close the browser. you have to manually go and use the little arrow all the way to the left. again:

4 - the library seems like it could be useful, but there are still only 3 favorites icons on the left side. so i dont use it, because icons are already taken by shortcuts to Audio Files, Projects, and DJ Tracks.

theres easily room for 2 more icons without altering the interface from what i can see. why only 3?

5 - if you click the little icon to set your icon to the Library, theres no way to change it back to your default setup other than going ALL the way back thru your hardrive to reset your default as the root. so, i dont use the Library

6 - the new search feature was sorely needed, as was dragging and dropping files and the rightclick menu for file operations.

however the move/copy/paste file operations are only practical if the place you are coping to is on the screen in your browser. because there are no copy/paste functions on the context menu.

but other than those 6 things, its great i think :)

(all kidding aside i really think most of these things could have been addressed pretty easily, they're not major projects compared to things like freeze and pdc.

just a little foresight or a focus group there to point them out during the design phase is all .... )
.
Yes to all your points

Yeah, that's what I meant by bundled settings. You're absolutely right though!
