Monitors - what to replace the VXT4s

Post by stevemac » Thu Jun 06, 2013 3:46 pm

Hi there,

I've not had a good time with my monitors and getting an accurate idea of my bass. Seen as I make music that's extremely bass heavy, my KRK VXT4's aren't helping.

Whilst they are good monitors, they are small and I've not managed to get bass 'right' using them. Therefore I want to sell and get a pair that cost the same (circa £400-450) but are bigger.

Whilst I know this means the overall quality may be less, having a good bass response is more important.

Any recommendations!?

Have you considered the KRK subwoofer? That will help you get a better handle on your bass than new nearfields would.
Apogee Duet 2, Jam / Macbook Pro - Lion / Waves RenMaxx / Suite 9
I make organic indie rock/pop with guitars and mics and stuff.

This.

Buying bigger speakers at a bit less than a pair of VXT4s won't give you a better idea of what is going on in the low end.

OK cool, although I've always been put off by sub woofers as I (perhaps wrongly) thought it would add too much and colour it too much.

I don't have any experience of sub woofers though and much if this is just assumptions I've made. Always dangerous. Any tips on sub woofer use? :)

Also, the KRK 10s is £320. If I sold the VXT's for £400, wouldn't a pair of £700 monitors be better?

If you like the midrange from the VXTs and it is just the lows that are a problem for you, then a sub might be more beneficial.

The VXT manual has a diagram for the setup of a subwoofer with monitors. I think the problems come with using them in small rooms and possibly too close to walls. Any ported speaker, including the VXT4 will be colouring the low end.

stevemac, where are you? There may be someone nearby who could let you try their KRK sub with your setup...

I use a 10s with Rokit 5s and the bass extension is very good IMO.

It makes a difference with my 5s, so it would certainly improve the lows of your VXT4s (which have less bass than my RP5s).

Adding a sub will effectively turn your two way system into a three way, which is better (IMO) than just getting bigger two way cabs.
