If you dont need more PCIe based expansions, it might work.

Lot's of Thunderbolt ports and USB3 and HDMI ports...
Will be really, really fast...
Won't be cheap...
I wonder what the price will be. I know it won't be cheap but maybe it might be "Mac cheap". They might have cut some costs in making it smaller and somewhat taking the "Mac mini" approach to doing a desktop but Im guessing a base model would start anywhere from $2250 to $2400 (assuming they have cut costs some vs the older Mac Pro).
If it turns out to be "Mac cheap" it would probably go for about $2000 base but I don't see that happening at all since they didn't pull many punches on this box and is going for all new cutting edge technology.
The cost will be more than the box itself (as what my lesson was with the Mac mini). These type of boxes come with very little in terms of DVD drives, External Hard drives, Facetime camera etc, so I had to spend a little more on that type of stuff for the mini, and while Thunderbolt and USB 3 are very fast, you will run out of ports quickiy on modern computers and will need to invest in a good hub.
Some of the omissions will help keep the costs from going to a new Mac level of high, but yeah I don't see the sticker price being too pretty, but at the same time I doubt there will be much difference in price from the old Mac Pros current price vs the new Mac Pros.

Haha, you're right but I'm still happy to know they'll be manufactured here. It's about time we started building things again.H20nly wrote:

^ no doubt!
we need to make something besides sore assholes, health care profits, weapons, and fast food.

The ad copy indicates that it's designed and assembled in the US - with *some* select components manufactured stateside. That means that there are still myriad components that will be imported from overseas.

A: Everyone knew that they were going to make it smaller with whatever was the fastest Xeon out.
this leads to
B: It was obvious once Thunderbolt and USB3 came out that manufactures in general and especially Apple were going to move towards externals for PCI, firewire, DVD/Blue Ray players etc.
C: It has six Thunderbolt slots, that are twice as fast as the Thunderbolt out now, plus USB3. Expansion isn't an issue.
D: The graphics cards are out of hand, but more and more power hungry applications are using graphics cards for extra CPU, this is the point.
E: You won't be buying this because you're on a budget, but because you want something ridiculously fast. Most of us have no use for it really. People doing video and animation will.
That said, Live's known CPU piggishness will never be an issue on a machine like this, and if they ever release a clear/smoke version where you can see all the internals like they did with the original iMacs I will buy one purely for the mad scientist aesthetic!

It's a Mac Pro, if you can't afford it or think it won't be worth it then it's obviously not for you.
