interested in handheld recorders? Zoom H6

Post by Angstrom » Wed Jun 19, 2013 12:29 am

This thing looks pretty damn good to me. 4 onboard XLR / TRS Line jacks, with two additional modular ones. Records 6 channels. I guess I'm just a sucker for modularity.

Appears to be $399 USD on pre-order, released in July

yeah, i got my eye on that too.

I need to easily record organic sounds anywhere and this should do the trick. 6 tracks can do a lot too.

Lots of ideas...

i don't.

They all sound pretty good. It's the functionality that matters.

A friend owning a gear shop blind tested them all once 2 or 3 years ago and the Nagra, which was the more expensive, was only third or fourth...

I've been eyeing a H2n the past week, actually. The recorder and its accessory kit doesn't end up that expensive. I've watched a bunch of YouTube videos with tests, and it seems to be pretty good quality too. The H4/H6 are all about extra features over the cheaper one.

I have an H2n, it's good for an all-in-one unit. But I desire XLR inputs for actual microphones. H2n is good for field and gig recording, but you can't do something like basic tracking with external mics, or podcasting four (or more) people with it.

There is a big use-case difference between the h2n and the upcoming H6

A Marantz 661 is probably the best price/value ratio in handheld recorders with XLRs & phantom. I own their smaller true hand held, the 620, and it's a really nice unit as well. Absolutely tiny.

I've been using my iPhone for field recording with halfway decent results. I usually end up chopping the shit outta the sounds anyway for my productions. But it would b nice to have a proper recorder. I only wanna spend like $150 at the most tho. Any suggestions.
Been doing research but kinda coming up blank.

Thanx.

Look for an H4n on eBay. For $150, I don't think you're going to do better than your iPhone. Do you have one of the mic attachments for it already?

No. But I'm checking it out and the h4n does look pretty nice. Maybe I will spend a bit more.

Yeah, it's pretty slick. I find that the XLR inputs are too noisy to capture really quiet sounds, and setting the gain is a PITA, but all-in-all it's very usable. I may need to get the H6 sometime, but for just a couple hundred more, I might as well just get a Fostex fr2-le.

You could also get the new Rode mic for iPhone too, combined with the FiRe, pretty potent and good sounding combo.
