Short GUI freezes

Post by TheBigCrunch » Tue Jun 11, 2013 3:51 pm

Hey all,

with Ableton 9 (32bit) I experience some strange GUI freezes from time to time. Sound will still go on but the screen freezes for a few seconds (typically < 5 secs). This happens after simple tasks like zooming in a waveform or soloing a track. It seems to be independent from cpu load and used effects and VSTs. Disabling 3rd party VSTs does not help. USB latencies seem to be OK. I recently installed a SSD as main harddrive. Audio latency is OK and stable. The OS (Win7 x64) is optimized for SSD use. Graphic drivers are up2date, on-board sound is deactivated etc.

Does anyone observe a similar behaviour or has some suggestions?

Win7 32bit, here, powerful machine, no DPC spikes at all (never exceeds 200us) strongly optimized for only DAW use. Same behaviour, time to time short GUI freezes.

Same over here since long time, noticeable when zooming over waveforms or midi clips.

So, is the b4 bugfix related with this issue?

So it turned out, that at some point, i re-enabled turbo boost, and speedstep, and forgot about it. Disabling them in the BIOS, and locking the CPU multiplier solved the problem for me.

Speedstep and all mechanisms to dynamically adjust performance have been deactivated for a long time on my PC. So on my end this does not improve the situation. I installed a MS hotfix

see http://www.native-instruments.com/knowl ... Processing

but this didn't help. Maybe for some of you the tools listed there might be of use for analysis.

I hope this gets fixed in one of the next updates. Waiting for 10secs to zoom a waveform is getting annoying ;-)
