I agree it probably won't do enough, but switching to solar would be infinitely better than carrying on with coal power. My point is the previous Qld state govt. did take steps to encourage that, despite having the big mining people to deal with, then the LNP got in and completely trashed it.

LNP governments will keep us on the course of doing nothing at all. At least at the moment we have the greens in as well which forced Gillard to go back on her promise about the carbon tax..

The point is DEFINITELY nothing will change if LNP win, and as you pointed out we spew out a lot of carbon here per capita.

People are slowly beginning to face it. Even though it's slow, we can't afford to go completely backwards.

I'm not advocating Labor either really, I'll probably vote green, but at least their preferences don't go to LNP. My argument is all about keeping them OUT not about voting Labor in.

It's not really an argument, it's more of a convenient way of trying to get people to understand that as altruistic as they wish to sound with all this "save the planet" talk what they really mean is "save my ass."

And it's not just that I don't care, it's that I have no faith that humanity can save itself, so why not minimize the damage as much as possible?

Sure, my arse, my family and friends arses, and everyone else. Plus art, history, culture.

I don't have too much hope, but we might as well give it a shot to save ourselves. If it takes the planet another 5000 years to recover from our last ditch attempt to salvage society, so what? Maybe different species will survive and evolve in the aftermath, but eventually it will be business as usual for planet.

Unless, we actually succeed. But that would probably be a good thing anyway.

David Cameron probably made that promise purely on the off chance that maybe they can squeeze a couple of votes out of the tiny handful of voters daft enough to believe a tory government would ever even vaguely entertain the possibility of giving the slightest fuck about the environment.

I hate the lib dems far more actually. They actually had the nerve to give people a vague sense of hope that there was some kind of alternative, then when the country finally was sick enough of the big bastard parties to vote Lib Dem then at the slightest whiff of power they dropped all of their principles and became tory enablers.

I already knew the tories were cunts.

It was maybe a bit like taking a starving homeless person to McDonalds and offering to buy them a big mac then eating it in front of them.

In fact I would say the same about Obama.

I think the lib dems used up most of their bargaining power on the alternative vote referendum and house of lords reform.

Ie. They sold out their principals to try to get a bigger slice of the pie. It failed because people were more interested in someone sorting out the giant fuck up labour presided over.

So who to turn to now?

In Australia at least we have preferential voting, so you can vote for whoever you like to satisfy your conscience then in all likelihood if they don't get elected their preferences will at least not go to the party you hate the most. Voting is also compulsory here so you don't get that thing so much where the tories keep getting in because no one can bring themselves to vote for anyone else either, and only tories can be arsed voting.

But the downside is all the people who have no interest whatsoever in finding out what it will actually mean also have to vote, and just go along with whatever Rupert Murdoch's TV stations tell them to in between episodes of the biggest loser and X factor.

Actually we ended up with a hung parliament here as well, with the greens and labor and 3 independents. It's actually worked surprisingly well, but the trouble is they have a national broadband scheme to ensure people in the outback can have 21st century internet, and that's a threat to Murdoch's potential profits.

So people now seem to hate Gillard, and no one seems to really know why. They just have a kind of vague feeling that they hate her so much they want to hurl abuse and throw sandwiches at her, and they also suddenly fancy a coke and have an urge to get a different kind of toothpaste.
