Can Ableton randomly play any of my drum loops?

Post by Sebastian » Mon Jun 10, 2013 6:31 pm

Is there any type of function/feature/device or whatever in Ableton that randomly start playing any of the thousands of drum loops I have? I have dozens of drum loop collection but wish for flows sake Ableton would just" throw one at me" instead of me choosing one by one via the folder view.

Thoughts?>:)

Thanks

Interested in that too.
Playing a randomly selected loop would save so much time !

Load massive mad loops into your audio track via session view... select all loops
and configure random options in Follow Actions ..

Try the "other" follow action. pg 182 in the manual (live 9). Although I'm not sure if this would work for 1000s of samples.

Even without loading the loops into session view I feel like (as long as they have been previously analyzed/warped) you could just open a folder full of loops in the browser and scroll down, click on random loop and preview it, keep pressing arrow keys until you find a good one and then load it up when you decide.

In fact I do this all the time without realizing that I am basically just randomly selecting a loop as quickly as possible, they usually get swapped out for something better but it's nice to have a funky beat going while you create the other elements of the track.

Try this:

edIT from the Glitch Mob has a whole bunch of Ableton tutorials on youtube and actually goes over a real simple way of finding kicks in huge libraries using the MIDI Pitch effect and a drum rack. It's not "random" in your library per se but it gives a lot of freedom and takes a lot less time trying to find good kicks and can be easily used with other samples. I use this trick all the time now hah :D

Is it just for when you are auditioning loops to add into Ableton from the browser? Do you need to do it in Ableton (IE do you need it to be time locked when you browse)?

I use a combination of Live and a program called ifoundasound which is a nice audio database browser that you can easily browse and tag sounds.

A couple of great things is it can look in ALL sub folders of a directory so if you are like me and have loops nested in nice tidy folders it's great for organization, but a pain to flick thru using Ableton folder-by-folder.

You can drag and drop into Ableton but alas, it wont time sync so not good for previewing as playing. Worth a look if you like to manage your samples though.
