First thoughts after a HEAVY day of full use:

No it does not over write your Logic 9 install. Yes, all the new loops are supposed to be new.

First you should ask yourself how you are a friend with somebody obsessing over factory preset loops. (Although I admit Apple's are top notch).

wouldn't say "obsessing", he's just pretty happy with the drum loops to do his rhymes over.... each to their own

Re: Logic Pro X
It's worth seeing if you can't get the upgrade for free. I'm ridiculously cheap, so I spent about an hour and three phone calls to get a refund for Mainstage 2 so I can get a copy of Mainstage 3 without paying $30 again. Bought Mainstage 2 last weak as a Kore replacement, haven't even used it!H20nly wrote:i bought Logic 9 just a few months ago... which is why there is now an update available.

Re: Logic Pro X
i believe i bought it around December... so i'm thinking that my application for asylum will be denied... but you're right, it's worth a shot.
it may have been later... closer to Live 9's release which may fall closer to the leg-to-stand-on zone, especially since they didn't announce it... they didn't announce it did they?

My response was a little snippy.
The new Drummer is truly groundbreaking. I watched about half the MacProVideo tutorials on it last night and that alone is worth the price. The instructor made a couple important passing comments. When Apple brought it to him his reaction was “OK, but I like tapping out my own beats”. He’s well skilled as a finger drummer but quickly realized that he couldn’t come up with the chops and variances big and subtle that an algorithm generated by actual drummers’ playing can.
“It’s like hiring a pro drummer that most people can’t afford (or have the room to accommodate)”. Even if you could you wouldn’t be standing behind them the whole time going “No dummy, play it like this.” I think it’s kind of silly that some producers won’t even claim to be a keyboardist, cellist, bassist, or whatever sound is being emulated in their track but feel their drum programming skills are on par with a real drummer and take great pride in that. My friend takes great pride in the fact that he taps out his own beats but he essentially taps out the same beat in every song so I don’t really see where the pride is in that.
NOTED: not every genre of music would benefit from a beat played by an actual drummer.
Re: Logic Pro X
Drummer is pretty wild, reminds me of the Chaos Designer in Stylus, but a lot more human feeling and useful. Being able to create your own kits certainly helps it go a long way towards getting past the rock genre it at first seems geared towards, though I'm not sure it's something I want to do everytime I need some drums "real quick".
Would be cool to see them release some newer club type sounds for it.

Re: Logic Pro X
Dunno, depends on if you like drums or not. People always claim that club music is beat oriented, but I would say that's not really true, in the sense that it's the same beat every time, with not much variance at all. oonz oonz oonz etc.beats me wrote: NOTED: not every genre of music would benefit from a beat played by an actual drummer.
Personally I think most every music at this point would benefit, simply because real humans have their own sense of timing and groove, machines have a preprogrammed sense of groove. Getting a drummer to play a simple beat, or having the space to use a live drummer is another question entirely.

I'm sure they'll probably add more genres, drummers, and drum sets in the future.
I highly recommend watching the MacProVideo tutorial on Drummer if you have access. A description of what it does really doesn’t do justice to its power and flexibility. I think a lot of people are going to write it off without doing any real diving. Not saying you would do that.
One tut covers how to show it where you want a fill and with the turn of dial tell it how short and subtle or long and complex you want it to be. Mind blown.
Re: Logic Pro X
This is all great news. I got sidetracked by having to learn to use both ProTools and Cubase in different courses I was doing and consequently am not very good with either of them. I always found Logic the easiest of the three to learn (for me ) but just kind of put it away for a long time.
In light of what you guys are saying I might just get Logic X instead of upgrading either of the other two.

Re: Logic Pro X
beats...is Drummer in Logic X a closed system or can you import/use other drum samples (like from N.I. or sample packs)?beats me wrote:Tarekith wrote:Drummer is pretty wild, reminds me of the Chaos Designer in Stylus, but a lot more human feeling and useful.
