MIDI from 3 controllers to 3 tracks simultaneously

Post by shootdaj » Fri Jul 19, 2013 1:26 am

Hi,

I am working on a set where I would like to have all 3 of my pad controllers control 3 different drum tracks, all at the same time. So the input from each of the pad controllers will be going to all three tracks at the same time. I have a few keyboard controllers, and I want to hook those up to one or more synth tracks also, so I cannot choose All Ins in MIDI From for those drum tracks, since that would route the input from all keys to drum tracks also. Basically what I want is a many-to-many routing, which I cannot seem to figure out how to do. I can route all 3 pad controllers to one track by having three different MIDI tracks, select one controller per track as the MIDI From, and route the MIDI To for those tracks to a single drum track. And I can also map one controller to multiple tracks, by just selecting the MIDI From on each of those tracks to the same MIDI controller, but I cannot seem to do both at the same time. I tried grouping the 3 MIDI tracks (that each have one controller selected in MIDI From), but apparently you cannot choose a group track as the MIDI From (on the drum track). Anyone have any ideas as to how I can accomplish this? Maybe a Max device?

About 5 minutes after posting this, I had the obvious revelation that I could just route the output of all my pads tracks to a single MIDI track, and then route input into any/all of the drum tracks. Sitting at your desk and looking at the same software for 4 hours tends to fry your brain. If anyone knows any other techniques, that would be awesome, because this method requires a lot of CPU because I need a single track per controller, and an additional one for routing for each category of controllers.

Can you control 'midi channel' on the controllers? Then you can have a channel accept 'Midi Ch. 1' to receive all controllers that transmit from Ch. 1.

Yeah but I'm using MIDI channels to keep my controllers separate because I'm also using the controllers as dedicated controllers for my set, so I don't want the notes on one controller interfering with another controller's notes (which would happen if I put them in the same channel).

In short, I'm using the MIDI channel to detect which controller the signals are coming from. Plus I use those controllers with other programs and the MIDI channel is sort of hard-coded into all my sets and other programs, so it would be a pain to change them all every time I want to treat the controllers as separate entities vs. when I want to treat them as a single combined controller. I was trying to find a way to route at the Ableton level rather than the controller level. I'm sure there's a way to do it in Max. Now, onto learning Max programming... :|
