But those late OS 9/early OS 10 days were painful.

That was right after I started making music with computers (remember Pro Tools Free for OS 9?), so it wasn't as bad for me as it was for some.

Shit, I know a professor who still keeps an old G4 PowerBook around to run apps that never made it to OS X. Fuck that. I'd rather use Windows.

After my short lived PC years I went back to music and Macs. The first plugin I bought was Battery 2. It wasn’t UB, whatever the fuck that meant. NI’s response “Yeah, that’s not going to work. Wait for 3 to come out and pay for the upgrade.” Guitar Center where I bought it gave me a similar tough shit attitude. I think the thought process back then was anybody on a Mac still at the time had been suffering with the mess for a while and should know better. Ignorance of the law isn’t an excuse.


In other user experience news, Logic has been crashing after sitting for a spell, not in the middle of use. The culprit seems to be Absynth 5. I fire off the report to Apple, haven’t checked Service Center to see if there is an update I don’t have yet.

Nowadays things have changed, and working on PC is almost better (much easier, cheaper and more choices. Less issues).

I’m fine if people prefer PCs for whatever reasons make sense to them, but I’m not sure I agree with that. I’ve seen countless “I have the most powerful PC on the planet and [software] keeps crashing!” which gets responded to with “What’s your CPU, video card, audio card, chipset, RAM, drivers…..?” and a bunch of other terminology I don’t need to know or worry about because I’m on a Mac. Again, I know Macs have their own issues occasionally.

"occasionaly"? This year at least 20 times. And it is a dedicated "audio-music" macbook pro. Issues with sound card drivers, issues with logic, with ableton live and with external gear, issues with AU, issues because as soon as it goes in "sleep mode" It does not come out from the "coma". Lately the mac crashes more times than PC, alas. Again: mac user since 1997.

This "mac never crashes" fairy tale is because the mac runs with just a few software and external gear: they choose for you "the best" (but many tome it is just a trick, in my opinion). So, every time it crashes or freezes the user tends to think "it is my fault".

The PC crashes nowadays because usually a PC user puts init everything, from torrents, to emule, to porno, to trojans, to games, etc. Otherwise windows 7 is as stable as OSX, in my opinion. But, the user, instead of thinking "it is my fault", puts the blame on windows.

But I do believe some people just have or get an Apple curse...just never ending problems, like on their 5th iPhone in a year because of problems.

Just an example: novation impulse + automap: perfectly working on PC, but i had to resell it because non compatible with logic. Focusrite audio board: perfect on PC, on mac it works, but as soon as the mac goes "sleeping" i have to switch it off, because everything freezes. The same with the old firewire audio gear I owned, at last I reselled it, because of many issues (power and "craks" when recording), although mac fans are claiming the firewire technology is much better than the usb: well, not true. Infact even RME and such nowadays have usb connection. USB3 will be the new standard, but Apple insists on "thunderbolt" future failure (like firewire has been). Let alone printers, external hard disk and usb keys (if you format a usbkey on PC the mac asks "what the fuck is that?!" ). Apple policy.

that's because the drives are formatted completely differently. HFS+ vs. NTFS (and/or FAT32) Windows is its own independent operating system at this point while Apple borrowed the bulk of theirs from Unix
