This thread is reminding me of why it costs so much to live here and why it’s worth it for the most part. And I need to get out of the apartment more. :x

that.

the woman i started dating a few months back is not a home body at all, she knows how to chill but wants to get out there first, chill later... at first this had me a little worried because of the price point of so many of the activities around these parts, but the truth is the further you get from SF the more there is to do that is totally free, cheap, or just plain worth it. not that there isn't plenty of the same in the city... it's just that i don't have to go there to experience it. she's a master at not spending too much cash on bullshit and saving it for dinner instead. excluding night club/music scene shit, i've probably done damn near as much cool stuff this summer as i have the other 8 years i've lived here.

Yeah, I’ve managed to get myself a fairly cozy financial situation here, even tossing money in savings every week. But the main reason for that is I really don’t go out much. My most frequent haunt is the Sunday morning matinee movie for $6.50. Once or twice a month I'll blast through $60 or so at JJ's Blues because its stumbling distance from home. :x

But I also realize there are a lot of things here that are cheap or free. I’m just lazy. But if I were to lift the spending embargo on myself I would like to check out more restaurants. I keep hearing the area, even San Jose, is tops for great restaurants and new ones constantly opening. But another reason I can save money now is also because I don’t go out to eat.

Last time I went to 1015, and granted it was probably 10 years ago, it was a mecca for wanna be gang bangers and a huge sausage fest. There was a long line outside and security was handpicking groups of females (which there weren’t many) to go to the front of the line. Fuck that.

that has not been my experience, except for occasional long lines. most of the shows i go to there are of the 'bass music' variety, so it's a huge burning man scene. the sound is pretty decent, too. never seen the male/female issue either, and there are always plenty of scantly-clad 'feathers & leather' ladies about.

Cool. Like I said, it’s been some time since I went last. Plus I’ve reached that age where I appreciate a seedy bar way more than a cavernous club and the people who frequent those places.

+1 for the Green Tortoise adventure.
+ 1 for roaming around the financial district after midnite.
Lower Haight.... Robotspeak to geek out on equipment and maybe pick up something memorable... then pop next door for a beer at my favorite bar the NOC NOC... if it's still there.

Keep heading up Haight street, lots of great shopping, and you run into Ameoba records... so rad! This leaves you right on the edge of Golden Gate park.... walk into the park... maybe check out the new De Young Museum... pretty rad... or keep going through the park and it will spit you out right at the edge of the ocean and there are some cliff areas to explore there.

So Fuking Inspiring!!! I miss San Francisco.

+1 for De Young if you want to see a museum. Tickets are reduced at the end of the day and the crowd has usually diminished...

And yeah... stop by Ameoba if you're into records...

Then, once you hit the ocean you turn right to go past the Cliff House to Land's End to watch the sunset from the the cliffs above the ocean. All in all a pretty nice afternoon's adventure.

I'm glad I posted this thread. Loads of good info so thanks.
oh, and people around here don't ever call it 'san fran' or 'frisco'. we say 'SF'. i'm sure i sound like a dick saying that
Not at all. Happy you told me :)

Looks like I'm going to go with the Powell & Clay St apartment option. Now I just need to figure out where I'm gonna stay in NY!

Interesting that absolutely nobody from NY has chimed in here.

Does anyone know if it's realistic/practical to fly to either Vegas or LA for a day trip from SF?

Or would the travel time still gobble up most of the day?

The flights aren’t long, I think about an hour a half-ish, but you also have to factor in airport time. I don’t know what you would get out of LA in a day. The place is huge and the traffic is famously awful. I’ve been in traffic there at 2 AM leaving a club and the freeway was a parking lot like it was 5 PM on a work day. Vegas is a little more face value and most of the hotels are close to each other on the strip.
