You are using the wrong record switch. The record button you are using is for the Arrange. Try using the Record button lower left side.
When you use the Arrange record button and press the record switch (Lower Left) you are recording into a clip and simultaneously into a track in the arrange. Which then is waiting for you to hit the Orange tab to commit, that is why you have silence. Hit your tab key and check it out.. You will see data in a track and also in a clip in session. Also you do not have to hit Play to start recording.

In Session when you use the Record button (Lower Left) you record your data and then hit the same switch to stop recording. (It still continues rolling) Hitting the same switch again puts you in Overdub.

Edit:

The first record switch you hit is correct but then you are hitting the Arrange record, there lies your the problem.

Thank for the reply..
I understand that the main record button on top is to record into the arrangement..
(this is exactly what i want to do)
I dont want to record in to the clip.
before i press this record butting midi data is flowing through live and works exactly as i expect it..
pressing arrangement i would expect to record what is being played by clips and as before i press arrangement record any other midi data incoming from he pads(push) or any other midi device.
but all it does is silence what is being input by the device which does not make sense to me.

Sorry if I am misunderstanding you. Are you trying to overdub the same time you are recording the clip to the arrange?
I just tried it and I loose input but hear the clip being recorded. It doesn't work that way. What happens if you record the clip to the arrange and then try to overdub, are you still loosing input?

Exactly..
seems a simple enough task but it appears live has its own ideas about that
which makes no sense.

It appears to block midi data
and we have the + OVERDUB icon which also appears to do nothing

I find that in the arrange when I want to overdub, sometimes I have to deselect the O/D button and then select it again for it to work or it just records over my track..

Still..

It dont make any sense on any DAW that i know of, that incoming midi is blocked when you press RECORD while previously recorded midi data is being played on the currently armed track.
this has to be any oversight and if not very wrong for a real DAW workflow.

I guess they want you to do your overdub to the clip in session. Then record that to the arrange and overdub in there also.. Incoming MIDI will not be blocked in either situation.
