DJ-ing with PUSH

Post by sunnyallyear » Sun Aug 18, 2013 10:52 pm

Hi all! :)

Looking to get into the world of DJing with Ableton & PUSH for a monthly podcast (ambient, progressive, r&b).

Wondering if anyone has any useful resources, I'm most interested in a:

- DJ template / map for PUSH
- Video resources, tutorials to DJ w PUSH
- If PUSH isn't the best mixing device, what can I buy as an add-on to make the mixing process more streamline?

You advice is most appreciated - thanks!!

Disclaimer: I don't have Push yet (waiting for my preorder), so take my opinion with a grain of salt.

I looked into controllers for DJing with Live. And I went with Push, because I also love making beats. As I don't expect Push to be good for DJing on its own, I'm planning to add another controller that has line-faders, a crossfader and EQs. Once Push has arrived I will probably find out what's lacking for DJing.

Right now I'm looking at the NI Traktor Z1 as a MIDI controller with integrated audio to complement push. It also has filter-knobs that could be assigned to a rack with Low/High-Pass filters in Ableton. Keep in mind that MIDI latency could be an issue with controller based mixing (don't expect fast cuts)

Other controllers I seriously considered and dismissed in favour of Push:

AKAI APC-40: From what I have read, this is the goto controller for DJing with Live. It's equipped with lots of faders and knobs, as well as a grid of pads to manage clips. It's been on the market since 2009 and adoption seems huge, so templates should be available from a variety of sources.

Electrix Tweaker looks like a great controller, too. And may actually be just what you're looking for.

Try asking over at AbletonLiveDJ.com too, might be some guys there using it who would be willing share some tips.

If you're not adamant on using Ableton, then there's a Push mapping out there that allows you to control Traktor with it.
I use it all the time and I find it to be pretty intuitive.
