You have to admit though, this is a pretty profound insight.GHOST FX wrote:you have to look at Ableton as a software...
Re: why is so expensive?
If the OP instead spent the $500 on Apple stock back in 2004 and sat on it they would now have hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Which is almost enough money for the Live upgrade.

Re: why is so expensive?
You don't need ableton Live to make music, there are many alternatives: a guitar and a piece of paper to start.
I live in a third world country, I saved two months to get my license. I don't how it's a problem in a 1st world country at all, you can pay for a computer obviously which is about 500 USD why not the software?

Re: why is so expensive?
I have ableton live intro. Costed me 25 bucks. With a coupon.
This along with garage band and synth1 is pretty much all the software i need.
Well maybe other free plugins and so. But the point is, you can do great shit with nearly no money (besides from the money you've spend in the computer itself)
In my case i have a 2000 usd Macbook Pro. So you can call me cheap for not wanting to pay for the complete ableton. But at least im legit. No cracks whatsoever.

Re: why is so expensive?
As an old hardware guy who has switch to software I can say its alot cheaper than what you'd have to do to male professional sounding music. Lets see, my triton cost about 3000$ new, sp-1200, 2000$, mpc-2000, 2000$+, vs-1880, 2000$+, reel 2 reel.... You get the point, I use ableton, a few plug in, a MacBook, push, a record player and some vinyl, oh, and an audio interface, much smaller and cheaper, not to mention easily upgradeable.

I agree when comparing it to other DAWs. (and I have two licenses)rhodes wrote:i think ableton live is too expensive.
i can't afford to buy any ableton software
i HAVE to download it in a php software, i want to make music, i dont want to sell my liver to pay a 499 US software.
people of ableton have to pay attention, not all your costumers live in switzerland or any rich country.
Reaper and some free VSTs could take you far.
Garage Band is the one that's too expensive. It requires a $1200 dongle.
Re: why is so expensive?
Mac Minis start at $600. So you're only half as clever as you think you are.kitekrazy wrote: Garage Band is the one that's too expensive. It requires a $1200 dongle.

this thread is so old, Ableton Live now costs Ø30,000
Re: why is so expensive?
Ableton is inline with most DAWs maybe a tad on the expensive side.rhodes wrote:i think ableton live is too expensive.

That said if you need a basic tracker and a great mixing/automation app, Reaper is $60. FL Studio is also decently priced hence it has a large following. If u have a Mac there is Logic a great DAW for $200.
Most DAWS have smaller versions as well.
Pro Tools, Cubase, Ableton, and Sonar are around $400-$500.
Most companies also have sales every now and then.
Music is an expensive hobby or passion. It has been this way for a long time. It is actually cheaper now to get into.
Back in like 1995 or so, you would be spending about $10000 or so to just get in the game.
People are getting in the game now with a cheap PC and a cheap DAW.

Yes it did. My first rig. 1995jlgrimes wrote:Back in like 1995 or so, you would be spending about $10000 or so to just get in the game.
Mac 6100/60 with 15" monitor £1200
Roland JV1080 about a grand
EMU Esi 32 with 2mb RAM about a grand
Yamaha SY85 about a grand
Samson mixer about £800
Alesis Quadraverb about £400 I think.
Cubase Score. Monochrome program, midi only. Used the printer port for the midi interface. Not sure of the cost....
Oh and a DAT for recording...
The good old days eh

The difference is that a computer is a physical object and software is not.login wrote:you can pay for a computer obviously which is about 500 USD why not the software?
People like to have something to show for their money - something physical that they can see & touch. Because software is not a physical thing, they don't see it as holding the same value......and therefore they think it should be cheap or free, or they steal it.
The same thing has happened with music. In the past, people had to go to a store and buy a physical object - a slab of vinyl or a CD. Now that downloads have taken over, that "physical object value" is missing and people don't regard the downloads in the same way. They don't see the worth.
Re: why is so expensive?
Also software relative value depends a lot on why you use it. If you use it for proffesional work it's preceived value increases.102455 wrote:The difference is that a computer is a physical object and software is not.login wrote:you can pay for a computer obviously which is about 500 USD why not the software?
