I find it a bit of a tough one - I worked with people with mental disabilities for many years, but what do you say when you hear someone say "that's retarded"? If there's nothing wrong with being mentally handicapped, then there's nothing wrong with someone saying a thing is retarded either. If there is something wrong with the fact that a thing is retarded, then there is something 'wrong' about people with a mental disability.

People use it to convey the idea of the inability to learn something, which is exactly the area which defines mental disability. To complicate matters, people with mental handicaps are less likely to be able to participate in written discussions of the use of the word, to decide for example to 'reclaim' the term, or to articulate their preference for a term, or maybe no term at all.

The word itself is completely inaccurate to describe mental disability anyway. "Retarded" refers something that has had its growth interfered with, by a specific agent. People with mental disability haven't generally been interfered with, they just happen not to learn as subtly as others. So the word was never a very good one.

I'm glad you spoke up about it at any rate,

e.

I know many folks including myself that identify as BI or gay or intersexed and so on that use the term "thats gay" It has taken on a new meaning. It is almost the same thing as "thats TOTALY lame". So I guess it is all who is saying it and when and that makes things no clearer so glat that i could be of no help here. LOL 8O

yep, it's the intent behind what you say, not the word.

A friend of mine says "thats gay" about anything he thinks is good. I could let him off saying "wow love your trousers, they're really gay" if they were particulary tight or something. But he also uses it to describe laptops, nice buildings - tasty cups of coffee. Anything he likes - "hmm, that's gay", a complete one-man re-definition. I think the idea is - if it is good then there must have been a gay man involved somewhere!
he is of course a big gay homo himself.

Does my name offend anyone? I can change it to Sales Dude McBreast if need be.

I agree the retard thing is pretty distasteful. 'Freeze Motherbitches' always rubbed McBoob the wrong way too.

The forum seems ultra sensitive today. So much drama. It's the internet. You CANNOT take things personally. GImme a break.

Its me who is offended. I am a Retard and you call keep refering to me as a Retard. Im mentally challenged. That is my future DJ name and is intended to bring attention to the plights of retards all around the world.

So please be politically correct and refer to me as 'Mentally Challenged'. To not do so is an insult to what you people call "Retards"

:(

I mean everyone... anyone...

We are strangers in different parts of the world tapping away on computer keyboards. To take some thing here "personally" is wrong because we are not in "person".
