How to sync Ableton samples+fx with real vinyl - need advice
I've got 2 technics mk2 turntables, xone92, and Ableton live 9.
I'd like to mix Ableton effects and self-made samples with my vinyls when i play.
Any ideas how to do it?
It should take some syncing i believe, but i have no idea yet how to do it.
Can this be done with computer software or should i buy new devices?
Thank you.

How long have you had the Xone92? Did you read the manual?
Are you not aware that it has a MIDI output which can send a clock signal?

What good is that clock signal going to do when Ableton Live 9 in practice can't be a sync slave? The only way to sync is to let Ableton be the master to something that can take a sync signal (not vinyl then) or to beatmix Live manually to the vinyl.102455 wrote:How long have you had the Xone92? The latter is certain doable with a good controller and is what I choose. Push in my case.
Basic gear info: Macbook Pro with macOS 10.12, Ableton Live Suite version 9 (64bit) with Ozone, Push and APC20 as controllers.

Well yes, I'm aware of the long term slave sync issue - but the OP didn't ask if it would sync, he asked how to sync.
The clock output of the Xone92 is dreadful anyway. About as stable as an elephant on a tightrope.
It might be slightly better with a Scratch Live setup using The Bridge, but he'd have to digitise his vinyl and use timecode.

Unfortunately, Xone 92 doesn't send the clock according to the beat rate of the vinyl. As far as i understand. It doesn't have the bpm counter.
Maybe if the signal goes first to ableton as audio, then i can apply some effects on it, and then - get it back to the mixer. Probably i'll need a sound card for that. And then use some plugin or VST, that reads the bpm out of the input signal.... Complicated.
Any thoughts how to simplify the whole thing or ideas about the VST?
Thanks.

Well, did you try this one: http://teragonaudio.com/BeatCounter.html?Dj Andrei Pooh wrote: Maybe if the signal goes first to ableton as audio, then i can apply some effects on it, and then - get it back to the mixer. That will display the tempo but it won't allow Live to sync to the beat.mikb wrote:Well, did you try this onehttp://teragonaudio.com/BeatCounter.html?
The Xone doesn't have a BPM counter, but as I already stated, it can send a MIDI clock output. If you don't know how this works.....read the manual.
The biggest problem is that Live doesn't sync very well to an external clock.
Using DJ software such as Virtual DJ it would be far easier because you could use ReWire.

I followed an old post, claiming beat detection, that led to that site but I didn't evaluate the details. Sorry.102455 wrote:That will display the tempo but it won't allow Live to sync to the beat.mikb wrote:Well, did you try this onehttp://teragonaudio.com/BeatCounter.html?

I don't see the value of advice based on what could work if only the reality was different. I think it's currently safe to say Live 9 doesn't sync to an external clock, period. This means nothing but some kind of beat mixing will work in practice. It seems to me to get a somewhat reliable bpm counter simplifies that task. Or not.

Assign a bpm knob/fader in Ableton and assign nudge controls for pitch bend just like an old cd mixer. Use a beat track in ableton to match the BPM with what you are playing on vinyl. Success.

Something like that, yes. I'm not sure how well tapping is detected by Live, but if you have a controller that can take the taps this might work out for getting the proper current tempo for Live. Hmm, that got me thinking.Donnie wrote:Assign a bpm knob in Ableton and use nudge controls for pitch bend just like an old cd mixer. I've not used one myself, but wouldn't this do the job?

Those are awesome, but can you even get them anymore? I thought they kinda vanished like the Cycloops.

nice. But would this fix Ableton Live 9s Sync issues? I think not.decoded_ wrote:http://www.redsound.com/products/SoundBITEMicro.html

Maybe because they didn't work? They are on Ebay of course http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_trksid= ... &_from=R40Donnie wrote:Those are awesome, but can you even get them anymore? I thought they kinda vanished like the Cycloops.

They do work - I've got one myself. Generating a clock isn't the problem though (his Xone mixer does that too). Getting Live to sync to it is where it all comes apart.
