Any way to externalize MIDI edition?

Post by camilomusic71 » Sun Aug 25, 2013 12:43 am

A couple of days ago I was introduced to Cubase's MIDI editor and loved some of its features. The way it opens up on its own window, being able to be neatly placed where it's most comfortable, is very convenient. It's also capable of displaying the parts of multiple instruments in the same space, which is very handy when you're writing string ensemble parts and stuff like that. Live's MIDI editor can't be detached from its place, which sometimes makes it really hard to work with when you've got many things going on, since you can only expand it so much until it takes up the whole available work space. You can't edit or see more than one part at once either (can you?).
I love Live and am very used to work with it, and am not considering migrating to Cubase only because its MIDI editor suits me better, but it'd be cool if I could have both things at the same time. I've got two monitors so I would love it if I could have the MIDI editor always open on my second screen or something like that. I considered rewiring Live into Cubase, but for what I've been reading the only thing rewiring does is sync both DAWs audio outputs, is that right? So, my question would be as follows: is there any way to integrate Cubase's MIDI editor into Live's work flow dynamic? And if not, is there any way to detach Live's MIDI editor and have it floating in an independent window? I read somewhere about a Max app that let you do that with the mixer and the session view, but for what I recall it didn't include any feature associated with the MIDI editor. Any light you guys can shade on this would be cool. I've been looking around the forums and google and nobody seems to have an issue with this.

No, and No. I don't think Max4Live can do what you are asking since the editor is integrated with Live, not a separate editor. What would be nice is if they allowed that as a feature request, i.e. you want to use MuseScore, Crescendo, Finale Notepad. Live's MIDI editor is pretty basic, draw in notes, edit velocity, not a ton of bells and whistles which should have been considered for it over the years (or got pushed to back burner for stuff others don't want/need like myself since I am not a DJ). Studio One V2's editor is pretty decent in that respect for multiple instrument editing. Here you have to edit each clip as far as I know.

Thanks Mike, I'll take a look at Studio One V2's, though I think I'll still have the same integration problem I've got with Cubase. I figure I could always run Live and Cubase simultaneously through ReWire, that way I can do all my MIDI editing and Cubase and the rest in Live. The only problem with this is that I won't be able to use my Launchpad for what it's intended, since Live running as a slave app won't allow that, and for what I've read so far, Live can't be run as a master when rewired with Cubase.

I haven't done this yet but you should be able to rewire live into Studio One. Their editor for multi-track looks nice, click on track, edit notes, click on another, rinse repeat. I am just not used to working time-line based like i used to back in Acid 4 days (before I switched to Live). I love Session view because I can whip something up, copy it, edit for different pattern, rinse repeat. Multi-track MIDI editing would be a boon for the App but I don't foresee it any time soon as abes are more interested in the DJ/Live playing IMHO and it's always been that way, DJ high on their list IMHO, hence Push, APC40, etc... If I did live stuff it may be a different ballgame but I don't and no plans to do so either. I just need to get off my lazy ass and start working on new material. My thread with tempo issue hasn't been resolved and I am thinking of doing a collect all/save and send the set to Ableton to see if they can give me an answer. So far nothing I've tried has resolved the issue....and it's pissing me off, very little response from people on the forum as well which is surprising for the issue I am having....
