Export a Midi Clip directly using Drag and Drop possible?

Post by monkeyEcho » Mon Aug 26, 2013 2:03 pm

Hello everybody,
I'm wondering if there is a way to export Midi clips from Ableton into a VST instrument directly(!) using drag and drop instead of using "export Midi clip / ctrl-shift-E".
I'm using some Spectrasonic tools and they are able to accept Midi files via dropping. I'm a bit lazy and I don't want to export the clip first into my windows file system, locate the file and drop it again on the VST.

I tried to drop the midi clip to the desktop (does not work) and I tried to drop the midi clip directly to Stylus RMX (does not work and crahsed Ableton Live).
So, any hint from your side?

Thanks in advance for your time and effort.
Cheers,
Stefan

Have you tried dragging the MIDI clip to the browser and then dragging from the browser into the VST window?

Hi TYLRbass,
thanks for the tip. No, had not tried that until know.
First the good news: Trillian and RMX (and with them Live) are no longer crashing when I use the library as an interim storage for the Midi clip.
Now the bad news:
1. Trillian brings an error message "Cannot read this Midi file"
2. RMX says nothing, showing the name of the midi clip, but does not change at all.

So, helpful in avoiding the crash but still not the result I wanted.

In the meantime I had contact with support at Spectrasonic and I got the following answer:
"You can drag any MIDI file to Trilian as long as it's a MIDI file.
You shouldn't get a crash as long as it's MIDI."

My conclusion: Drag&Drop directly from Ableton Live Clip to RMX or Trillian will not work because the explicit Midi format is important. :( BUT...

Instead your tip gave my the idea to export the Midi clip no longer to an arbitary directory but to the User Libary. It then showed up in the Browser and I drag&drop it from there. Doing this I don't have to switch in my workflow from Live to Windows Explorer and back to Live. Instead I can stay in Live the whole time and using the shortkey Ctrl-Shift-E for export I'm just as quick as dragging directly. :D

Thanks a lot for your time.

Now that I think of it, when you drag a clip to the browser it creates an ableton clip file and not a standard MIDI file, my bad. Glad you figured something out. Wouldn't it be nice if you could drag a clip to the browser, and hold a modifier key that would change the format from .alc to .midi? FEATURE REQUEST! 8)

Actually, after writing my last post I had the idea to use Strg Alt Shift as modifiers while dragging. Unfortunately, with the same result as before. So I support the feature request :)
