I've been tinkering with synths for years, so I really hesitated buying Syntorial. The price was the primary sticking point. After working through the demo, I finally broke down and bought it and have been working through it for about a week now.

Even though I already know what all the controls on the synth do individually, I'm learning a lot about how they interact with each other and how to use them together to get the sound I want. The "challenges" in particular are teaching me how to listen to a sound and figure out what controls to adjust to achieve a certain effect. The challenges are a little uneven; some are trivial, but some are really subtle and tough to get right. It's these tough ones that are training my ears the most, mainly by pointing out different aspects of the sound that I initially didn't pay enough attention to.

This app is good for someone with an interest in sound design, but not much experience. It's good if you're tired of searching through all 10,296 bass presets you've collected looking for just the right one. I consider it well worth the price.

Disclaimer: I don't have any connection with the author or his business. I paid full price for the app (well, the $99 introductory price). I have not and do not expect to receive anything for this post. No one asked me to post this. I'm just a happy user.

Hey Everyone.

Just a heads up: We've updated Syntorial to version 1.2, which among other things, includes 50 presets for Syntorial's standalone synth, included in the free demo as well, available at http://www.syntorial.com/try.php

this is awesome. running the demo now.
I was surprised at the price point. I'm sure it's worth every penny though!

edit: this is awesome. would love a volume control and a 1.5x fastforward.

Hey Abletonians

We're happy to announce that we've released a plugin version of Syntorial's synth, known as Primer. Included with your purchase of Syntorial, Primer comes in VST and AU formats for both Mac and PC.

Primer is also available as a standalone synth built into both the demo and paid versions of Syntorial. So if you'd like to try it for free, just go to syntorial.com/try.php to download the Syntorial demo. Once installed and opened, just go up into the Options menu and select "Launch Standalone Synth".

Nice! Sounds like it’s been successful enough to continue to expand.

Now about that iPad app.

Just wanted to let everyone know, that we've officially released v1.3.1, which has added:
  • MIDI Learn - MIDI controllers can now be mapped to control the synth interface.
  • Skip Ahead - Users can now jump ahead and unlock lessons.
  • Lesson Tweaks - Under-the-hood modifications have been made to several patches and MIDI playback files, in order to eliminate "buried" parameters.
  • Minor bug fixes.
