why 24 bit?
It's vinyl which IMHO beats 16bits when it comes to dynamics and storage is cheap. Saves me from doing it again later anyway.
Of course it can be argued music made on a computer doesn't have the dynamic range nuances that can be discerned between 16 bit and 24 bit source, but then again why use 24 bit audio cards when there's 16 bits?
If nothing else I leave my vinyl purist friends without solid arguments. They'd be hard pressed to explain why only vinyl can sound better. The 24 bit recording will at least be a very good copy that doesn't detoriate with playing.

I'm not saying everyone must do 24bit recordings, it's just a preference of mine. Let's also not ignore that 8bit and 12bit samples sometimes sound way more nice depending on source and usage.

I'd consider 24bits an option and not a requirement. 16bit works fine for sampling IMHO. But personally I'd rather downsample or (rarely) do multiple samples in 24bit, 16bit, 12bit and 8bit.

I'd suggest anyone wanting to actually reproduce vinyl to try out a few products on the same source material, use the same quality and see what the difference sounds like (if any). The USB-vinyl recordings I've heard have made me cry in disgust. That doesn't mean all products are that bad.

When I record vinyl for DJ purposes I use a Technics SL II with stanton pickups, a quality RIAA preamp and a good quality 24bit audio card, as I feel that particular music have been mastered for the Technics deck and not for a generic vinyl player. For other types of music I'd choose something else like a Linn.

For Sample purposes you don't have to think in that vein at all, but except for set up time and to some extent cost, you don't really lose anything. It's up to you to make your own decision based on your needs as you perceive them.

i suppose you could sample a company from the internet in some way, but you definitely can't "be hooked up into Ableton to sample some records" unless you're actually in the office... since both 'Ableton' and 'records' are physical not virtual.
Did you miss the co-op part? Short for Co-operation. Your remark was not even half as smart as you thought.
are you missing the part where the software is called Live, not Ableton?.. or do you really think asking the Ableton team for some co-op is twice as clever as not knowing the name of their product?

Nope. You tried to be funny about someone calling "Ableton Live" just "Ableton". As you could very well sample Ableton itself — whatever that could be — with some friendly co-op from anyone at the Ableton office (just visiting, friend or staff) setting up a microphone for you on site — you could even call there and sample some ambience or whatever — even when not being there, or at a conference booth, a lecture — coming to think of it I sampled someone from Ableton giving a lecture just recently — or from promotional material with sound, I just felt your remark was unimaginative at best. Especially as you the issue had already been addressed.

Don't try to be a smart ass at other peoples expense. Be helpful.

If you play it backwards, does it say "Oh shit, another bug"?

Well, if you remove the ground noise and use the new EQ8 turned on its head with some spectrum reversals to get the clutter of everyday business sounds out, you will most likely be hearing ghastly voices whispering: "pray for sync slave abilities any time soon".
