I'd embed it, but it's quite a large pic
I did know this picture and you're right, one will be able to see the devices from a specific track on one view and the midi on the other.

I did phrase my question badly sorry... what I mean was that I'm not sure if you could work in arrange view/session view on one screen, while editing a specific midi clip in that view on the second monitor.

- arrange view on one screen and the the session view on the other like a mixer -> yes
- arrange view or session view on one screen, clicking on a midi-clip opens the editor on the second screen -> I don't know
I suppose you could just drag the midi editor in one of the views to cover the whole screen, and then whenever you click on a midi clip in the other view it'll be shown in the enlarged area you dragged.
Like this you mean?

Yes exactly like that. Or the sampler's zone editor in the midi editor's place etc

at least it´s free, haha
yeah, but based on what Angstrom is posting from the other sources, complete with pictures of Dennis from Ableton,... it looks like it will benefit single monitors as well.

but let's not get too excited too soon here gents...

Did I get you this wrong? The iPad can be used as a second monitor AND act as a touchscreen?

If this is true you could have the midi editor window open on an iPad and 'draw' midi notes directly into Live? Too good to be true right!?

i,m using this iPad app to achieve this: air display
You have to install the program in your computer and your iPad.You can select duplicate windows o extended screen. The touchscreen area on the ipad works like if you are the mouse.
The only thing i can say it,s that works. But i really never did heavy use, only watch the tv on bed :P. Now i will use more intense with this update and see how it works. I,m on mac.But it,s a pay app maybe someone knows a free app on the app store to share.

The bad thing: you can not use this with touchable or any other app, so you sacrifice a lot

And it seems just five years ago that I made a feature request for this, how the time lays stagnant with slooooooow development in the world of ableton.
Now they just need a real tempo mapping system and live will be an actual daw, but why would ableton do that since no one uses audio anymore... just like no one had a need for dual monitor support. cunts.
Ableton should hire me to come up with ideas, I would walk around in assless pleather with a blow horn and a whip and I would backhand people until my shit was implemented.
The Push / Novation Launch Pad / Novation Launch Pad Pro / Novation Launch Key
/ Launch Control XL / Machine MkII / Machine Studio / BeatStep / Livid OhmRGB / Livid Code V2 / Apc 40 MKII

no computers or synths

20 Copies of Ableton Live Lite.

I can chime in on some of this, although note that we're not even in beta yet so things are always subject to change:

"will it indeed be possible to have side-by-side windows on a single wide screen?"

- Yes, it will. What you're actually doing is opening a second window, which is completely repositionable anywhere you want. For the demo, I just dragged it over to the second display and maximized it, but there's no reason why you couldn't just tile the windows on one big monitor.

"did Dennis appear to be using keyboard shortcuts/macros to switch between view layout presets?"

- Not really. I was just using Tab and Shift-Tab. In one-window-world, these always switched between showing the Arrangement/Session and Clip/Device views, respectively. In two-window-world, these key commands swap the views between the windows.

Oh, happy day. Great, great news.

Hmm, that's exactly how it works. Of course, the main issues are that most desktop apps aren't designed for fat fingers, and AFAIK multitouch is pretty much absent from these "second monitor" apps, but yep - you could put the midi editor on your iPad and enter notes with a finger.

I think it remains to be seen how satisfying that experience is. Interface design for touch is a different beast, and you may find that a dedicated multitouch app actually does this stuff better.

Now it turns out to be very interesting.

Who gonna win this fight?
who won between protools and cubase? logic and digital performer? you really think this is how it works, two years later one company says "ah shit we lost!" and folds up? it's DAWS, not football.

ableton isn't running like crazy to keep up with anybody. they are simply releasing a point release that has features that have been a long time in development. but again, thanks for the fantasy narrative.

as for your assertion that 'bitwig is around the corner...' Right. Right.
