What I don't understand is why the buttons got removed and replaced with... nothing?

I really miss those buttons.

... still not in 9.1.
I really wonder why these have disappeared without any explanation.

At first I had no idea what this thread was about. So I opened up Live 9 and 8 side by side. Still confused, then opened up envelopes. Wow why would they even get rid of this? It wasn't hurting anyone.

And now I have no idea how to use envelopes in clips for PAN. Is it even possible anymore? It's not in the menus either. Didn't read this whole thread, but how do you make clip envelopes for PAN now?

So stupid. Bring it back!

You can do clip envelopes for Pan and Volume

Choose in the envelope menue first mixer and in the second menue you'll see track volume or track pan. This is not what you want, but, select track pan and then rightclick in the clip and the first point of your contextmenue is : show modulation. If you do this, in the second menue you will see now track pan and track pan modulation, or track vloume and track volume modulation.

Track pan modulation is the old clip pan envelope and the normal track pan is the automation in the track.

The modulation makes the pan knob only orange, the automation makes a little red square and the knob moves. If you have both envelopes and drag the clip into the arrangement, only the modulationenvelope/clipanvelope will obtained.

And the automation envelope has the priority, if you have both indicated.

Wow that is so retarded and confusing. I wish they didn't have to change it. I would of never thought to do that.
I don't even..
