Sonar 2.2xl and Live Rewire

Post by calebc16 » Fri May 02, 2003 8:26 pm

Hello Everybody. I just bought sonar 2.2xl and I want to know if I can use live's rewire to connect them? Also why would I want to do this? I don't understand the benefits of rewiring but I'd like to take advantage of the capability. Anybody using these? What are you doing with this setup?

You sure can; I've been doing this a lot lately. First start Sonar, then choose Insert and select Live. Live won't automatically launch, so go down to your Start menu and launch it manually. It will automatically use ReWire.

Why use the two together? I use soft-synths. I'll get some loops going in Live and then record my soft-synths over the top in Sonar. You can also apply DX effects in Sonar to Live's audio output. If you have 2.2XL, that means you'll be able to use the Timeworks Compressor and EQ plug-ins. I like using the EQ plug in because its metering lets me see how much bass, treble, etc. are present in a track.

have fun,

Sorry to bug again. How do I record live's output in Sonar and vice versa?

I usually just wait until I'm done with a song, and then I'll use Sonar to mix everything down (using Render to Track or Export Audio). Once you've recorded Live's audio into Sonar, you're kind of committed. Here's how to do it if you really want to:

Set all of your ReWired Live tracks to Solo (or set all of your non-Live tracks, such as software synths, to Mute); then just choose Render to New Track.

There is no easy way to do things the other way around. If you want to use Sonar's audio inside of Live, you'll have to export the sounds you made in Sonar to .WAV files and then go back to Live and drop those files into Live (where you may need to fool around with Warp markers and such).

Let me know if you have any problems.

Okay you're great for helping me out pgunders. I should be alright after I learn the basics. Right now I'm just having trouble recording in Sonar. I have a song in Live with about 10 tracks. Step by step I do the following:

1) Open Sonar
2) Insert - Rewire
3) Open Live
4) Click the "solo" button on every track in live
5) Then I go back to Sonar and here's where my difficulties lie.

The Record button in Sonar doesn't exist. When I choose live in on a track i don't have the options of choosing live track 1 for instance - only Live L/R, Live Bus 3/4 etc. Is there anyway to just have each live track in Live to record out to it's own track in Sonar? How do I record when the Record button is "gone"? Thanks again pgunders!

Hi Calebc16,

Part of the problem was that I wasn't very clear in my instructions (you don't need to Solo the Live tracks in Live...I'll explain).

After you open Live as a Rewire instrument:
1) Do you want to assign each track of Live to a separate track in Sonar? If so, then there is a drop down menu (in Live, just above the volume slider for each track) for assigning "Busses" to Live's audio output. Change each track's audio out from "Master" to "Bus 3/4", "Bus 5/6" etc.
2) Switch to Sonar. Did you opt for Sonar to create new audio tracks when you inserted Live? If so, go to the "Audio In" on each track and choose whichever Live output Bus you want that track to take. Now you have each track in Sonar piping in music from each track in Live. If you didn't check the box for new audio tracks, you'll have to insert them by creating a new track in Sonar.
3) To actually record the audio (you're right, the Record buttons are disabled) you need to "bounce" the audio down to a new track in Sonar. Here is where you Solo the tracks you want to record; Solo the tracks you want to record in Sonar (and NOT in Live). That's the confusing part: you don't "record" Live's output into Sonar, you bounce it down to a new track.

If you just wanted the stereo mix from Live coming in on a single track in Sonar, you don't have to mess around with busses.
