Sampling with Push

Post by Nivh » Wed Oct 02, 2013 3:26 am

I been looking at getting the push recently since all i have is a laptop but im iffy on getting one because i mainly sample. So would push be good for me or would i be better off getting a mpd or something other then an push. I was considering getting a maschine but i don't want to go though the trouble of getting it working with live properly.

The mpd doesn't sample.

Neither does Push.

Both use Ableton Live to sample.

Maschine's software does allow for sampling with visible control on the device. Plus the software handles sampling differently from Live.

Both Live and Maschine have their unique qualities.

Depending on how you intend to do this sampling, and what you will do with the samples/how you'll play them. Push or Maschine can be great options. But it really comes down to your work methods.

If you work primarily w/ samples get a Maschine. I own both Maschine and Push and Maschine is my go to for drums and sampling. Push is amazing for playing melodies, scales and chords and just jamming.

Also, if you're not worried about hard-ware Live is more than capable for sampling.

Just for the record you CAN sample using Push (session mode) You just can't bloody do anything useful with it.

That Session sampling suddenly sparked a curiosity.

Is it possible for an m4l instrument device to 'steal' audio from a clip, and play it back as a sample?

Are you able to chop samples or use warp markers without looking at your computer?

Not yet! But they should implement it!
All they need is a knob to control scrubbing/play head of a clip, buttons to insert and delete warp markers and a button for slice to new midi, with the option to choose your chopping preset via knob or buttons. As well as the standard clip editing function we have. Also they do need a way to select what audio input or resample you want to use!

Honestly, that's the kind of stuff I'm glad they DON'T have on the Push right now. It's just so much faster to mess with that stuff on the bigger screen, why not just leave it for there? It makes the rest of the Push workflow so fluid not having to work around the nitty gritty stuff that made computers better for sampling in the first place.

I made a detailed feature request a while back about this as I would really like to see this workflow on Push.

Push - Sample Recording/Chopping workflow needed.

I advertise it as much as possible so some of you have probably seen it already.
Fwiw, if you do support it please give it a +1

Do Ableton even look at that sub-forum any more?

So much easier sampling in Maschine, especially chopping and duplicating onto pads.

I'd recommend Maschine if you're into sampling also.

Ableton have an opportunity to do some great things with Push, really hope this is one of them.
They have already declared in the past that Push is predominantly for Production over Performance so this seems like a missed trick as it is a very big part of the workflow for a LOT of people.

@panten
Dude I reply like your idea for sampling, and it really can't be that hard. I'm sure we could find a max4live genius to impliment a device to be placed infront of a drum rack and have it assign to a pad?
Or ableton could just get onto the job!
Really want better sampling and drum rack control in general.

Thanks man. I've been thinking long and hard about this subject for a while and while max4live can do some great things it's a bit of a messy procedure getting audio onto a MIDI track.

The suggestions I made on this subject would need a fair bit of work on Ableton's side I reckon, but they would implement something that is FAR more elegant than any Max4Live device.

I'm not holding my breath on this even though I feel quite passionate about the idea. There are thousands of suggestions for them to go through, some more serious than others (PDC?). The best we can do is continue to plug (not spam)our ideas at any opportunity.

Man, they still haven't fixed this? How hard could it be to add this functionality?

Is it just because whoever designed it never thought of recording or manipulating samples with Push?
