Moving files from Windows XP 32 bit to Windows 7 64bit

Post by League » Wed Oct 16, 2013 3:04 pm

Hi guys, I have an old workstation laptop where live 8 is in and all my files, first album, etc, etc.... windows XP 32 bit

I bought a new desktop workstation with windows 7 professional 64 bit and of course I'll have to transfer all the files from XP to W7.

I know I can plug in a usb harddrive and copy everything...and I already have two of those done, and back up.
My questions is, after I install live into the new system and try to put exact all the live 8 projects where they were, how can avoid missing files? Because I did this once into another laptop and live was telling me I had tons of missing files.... so I stayed with the old laptop to avoid this, but is time to move on and do the right thing.

what's the proper way to do this without missing any files

Thanks

it's inevitable that there will be missing files.

do your best first time and then open all your projects and copy the files from the old place until they all work

unless you stored everything in one directory - which I used to do in Live 8 - but then Live 9 came along and wrecked my backup strategy

On your XP machine - are you using the "Collect and Save" function so that all project files have been copied into a common directory?

Thank man.... I'll have to check where is every project's files and clean everything nice before I transfer everything to the new system. As I said, I did it in the past and didn't work so my alternative, or what I did was mirror the drive and I put in another laptop. My new workstation has a SSD drive and it's windows 7, so I won't mirror this one....

I didn't know I had a "collect and save" function.... My first album is in a folder in the desktop (I know is wrong I guess) and my second album that I'm currently working on is in another folder in the desktop too..... withing each folder there's a project per song....

even then there will be presets missing from your 3rd party plugins

o/s upgrades are a ball ache when you can't just image your drive and restore onto a new machine etc..

just pain
