Soundcard with MIDI vs. MIDI interface

Post by LouisC » Tue Oct 22, 2013 6:36 am

Hey.

I'm in the market for either a soundcard with MIDI I/O, or a MIDI interface and a soundcard separately.
I'm curious to know what are other forum-goes experiences with using either of the two, and whether there tends to be better MIDI latency/jitter results with dedicated interfaces?

I'm interested in getting a Focusrite Scarlett 6i6 which has MIDI I/O because I've liked their soundcards in the past, purely for audio, but if MIDI latency/jitter is no good maybe a dedicated MIDI interface would be in order?

I'm triggering things like a Boss DR-660, Korg Electribe, and MIDI retrofitted SK-1's and Juno's. EDIT: No clock/syncing involved, just note triggering.
I wouldn't be running the sound back into the computer for these synths and drum machines either, they'd be going into a mixer and then straight to tape.

What are your thoughts?

...if the scarlett is the interface of your choice, i'd give it a try...

a simple midi clock slave setting should be fine with that midi port....

jitter is no big issue on a one way midi ticket....
how many devices do you want to follow at the same time...?

dedicated midi interfaces are hard to find these days anyway...at least if you want them small and simple...

They wouldn't be following a MIDI sync/clock, I'd simply be sequencing them from Ableton or Renoise with MIDI notes. Computer is the master.
Probably 3 or 4 different drum machines or synths.

...than, well, you can should have at least two pairs of midi....and you better end up with a dedicated midi interface...something like the motu fast lane usb......or even a motu midi express 128...

chaining through one midi port won't give you real tight results on the second machine...so that one already can't cope with real rhythmical stuff anymore...
