tesla coils and all saints playing through lightning

Post by slatepipe » Sun Oct 27, 2013 9:06 pm

hi

yesterday i went to cambridge to see some tesla coils and various similar things in action at the annual cambridge teslathon. i don't really know much about them and i haven't really seen much of them in action apart from last month when i went to the tesla museum in belgrade on a weekend trip. it was pretty cool but was in a pretty controlled environment. but yesterday i saw this, which i guess was still pretty controlled but a whole lot more incredible to see : http://youtu.be/BP1LuqwX4wk

however, what really did my brain in was this : http://youtu.be/kIWC-MdDpqA

i'm still trying to get my head round it now and sorry if this is old hat to some people, but from chatting to the feller who made it: he plays some music on an mp3 player and this gets fed into a big machine that converts sound into a radio frequency. his home made tesla coil thing is tuned to the same frequency which then causes the arcing lightning as the molecules in the air are burnt.as a result of this the sound is then reproduced in the air due to all the electricity flying about. that's probably the wrong terminology but hopefully you get the gist. i'm probably a bit wrong in my description so if anyone can further enlighten me please go ahead

i really like that all saints song too. this is now my favourite rendition of it :D

I find this amazing! Just a couple of days ago a friend shared something similar with me, a rendition of Hall of the Mountain King played out on tesla coils (link below);

I have seen lighting bolt generators setup at festivals in the past, that are clearly making noise in a melodic/slightly musical way, but never to the level of the above couple of links. Thanks for sharing this slatepipe.

How awesome would this be if it was set up on a stage, playing out your live music in real time!! What a show that would be!!! 8) :D

There are midi enabled tuned coils available for sale now, and a group called Arc Attack uses this method to play their music, they do a lot of different cover tunes.

The midi is achieved by matching coil interruption frequencies to notes, given that the cool has a base frequency. Very cool stuff, it's explained on the oneTesla site.
UTENZIL a tool... of the muse.
