Change default grid resolution of MIDI clip view?

Post by phoswain » Sat Nov 02, 2013 3:45 pm

Does anyone know of a way to change the default grid resolution of the MIDI clip view, perhaps using options.txt?

I would love to make Ableton clips default to a fixed grid at a specific resolution.

My reason why: After reading this interview with Roger Linn about swing & groove, I've started setting the grid resolution on all my rhythm tracks to 48 parts per quarter note (fixed grid). It gives me a resolution to guide my nudging as I edit and perfect a groove. But right now I have to manually adjust the clip view resolution each time, after I've played in the original MIDI clip and it's ready for editing.

Thanks as always, everyone. . .

In case anyone's interested, here's the quote that got me thinking 48 parts per quarter note is – more or less – the smallest increment you need to consider when editing a rhythm part:
Roger Linn wrote:Regarding sequencer resolution, the LM-1 – used on all of those early hits by Prince, Michael Jackson, and many others – had a sequencer resolution of 48 parts per quarter note. (48 parts per quarter note permits swing variations of 50, 54, 58, 60, 62, 66, 70 and 75%, and I rarely need more swing increments than this.) The Tempest has a resolution of 96 parts per quarter note but almost all of the great grooves it makes don’t use more than 48 parts per quarter note resolution and often no more than 24.
