Getting Ableton to control MIDI device?

Post by toastytraxx » Fri Nov 08, 2013 12:09 am

I have a sample and a plugin layered inside of a drumrack. I want my keyboard to control the plugins keyboard but I can not figure out how to get it selected so it will recieve the MIDI.

The keyboard will map to a plugin in another midi track but will not to the one I have inside the drum rack. The key board is however mapped to the drum rack pads and I can not seem to figure out how to get it to control the plugin I have chosen.

Any help much appreciated.

I don't think you can play melodic instruments within drum racks (which is a requested feature that would be especially useful for Push and it's step sequencing), you can just trigger the pad (as you have observed).
But in your case of just layering I don't see the need (How do you even layer a melody?!). Just put it on another track than your drum rack.

To tell the truth I got caught up in what I was doing and didnt realise that I was asking something that is not musically going to sound good. Just a newby here to trying to get started.

This is similar to my first question, only this time it is my BCR2000 which will not control the software plugin. I am sure this can be done as this is the main source of what I want to control. It has functions such as attack decay etc.

All I want to do is map the knobs to the controls in the software. I can do this with the same plugin in a new MIDI track with nothing in it perfectly. This is the same project I was referring to in my first post.

There should be nothing stoping you from assigning midi knobs to parameters anywhere in Live, also on a pad in a drum rack. But maybe I'm not understanding your question correctly this time. Could you reframe it?

Inside of the drum rack I have A sample and plugin layered to create a instrument rack.

impOSCar is my plugin. I also have some other audio effects added.

I have got the BCR2000 on the right channel and in in/out in Ableton and the CC mapping is correct. I just cant figure it out.

Okay here is the deal.

You have two options, and one non-option that would be a nice Live feature (Live 10?).

1. You can create a second entire midi track and route it's midi to that drum slot. This means you'd have to use the second midi track to play melodies etc.

2. If you Only plan to use that set of instruments you can set that chain of the drum rack to receive all notes. Then anytime you play any pad on the drum rack, you'll always hear your keyboard being played. Although I don't entirely understand why it'd be necessary in that case to actually involve a drum rack for this.

Non-option: in some programs you can hit a 'pad' and then have full control over playing notes and controlling the embedded device. Live doesn't let you have note control in that manner yet. But it is a wicked fun Maschine feature.

I figured it out.

I need to use configure and map each button manually.

I select the knob in the software plugin and the knob name appears in the configure section then turn the knob on the BCR2000 and it maps the knob to the software.

Thanks for the help.
