MIDI Controllers... the final solution...

Post by 2kilo » Sun Aug 07, 2005 12:32 pm

Right, I just saw the "iControl - Total Control for GarageBand" bleeding GARAGE KACK... What about Ableton, eh, only been waiting since v3 for an OK'ish f-ing Live controller...

SOLUTION
__________________________________________________________

I had an idea, a possible means for us [users] to make our needs heard by manufacturers. We could collate all the functions we require in a controller, come to a general concenus, and then petition/nag a few companies to take it seriously...?

My day job is as a graphic designer, I already have plan drawings of a controller/mixer that I can upload for people to tart about with. Once agreed I can do a nice looking 3D visual to fight the battle with [see old example below - could try for magazine articles, etc]...?

The only snag is that we need a lot of people to say "aye" [at least 200?], and need the ableton bods [and anyone else] to help push the idea, anyone up for it...?

I don't care that we will be giving some open-minded company a FREE idea, I just want a good controller, can't wait any longer...

Love or hate them Sasha and Hawtins both built there own, no wonder...

old visual/idea of mine [just an example, can do a much better one]...

Currently the best options on the market seem to be:

1/ faderfox [too small for me]
2/ bitstream [best so far?]
3/ x-sessions [up-side-down]
4/ UC-33e [no crossfader]
5/ mawzer [expensive]

just added:

a neat idea. i personally feel theres a massive void in the controller market. i also like the idea of something that can be expanded. it all depends on the price.

I would love to see a fully customisable MIDI controller. I would like something with multiple sized boxes for the gear, though...I need something compact so I can easly reach between my MIDI decks (I made them from 2 M-Audio Trigger Finger's for activating clips. 1 on each size of a MIDI mixer)

still waiting here, word is they're on thier way and i would be very suprised if we didnt see some major new stuff on the market by christmas this year or NAMM next year at the latest.

its really taking a long time, i agree: most of whats on the market are cheap plastic toys that are not built for serious users.

agreed. i'm glad i'm not into techno etc, cos my uc-33 definately is not bulit for slamming the faders. and the lag when you do move the fader quickly... forget about it. but its the best around and it does the job.

Yes I´m in your boat too.

What you designed looks a lot like the mawzer, and if you build it in the same quality league like a good DJ mixer it can´t be cheap.
I think the mawzer isn´t really expensive, it´s just the price to pay if you don´t like to work with a plastic uc-33.

I have a bitstream pro (the old model) wich I like a lot, short faders wich really rock for DJ use, build like a tank (19" aluminium) but cheap hard plastik buttons, no usb connection and powering.

The faders of my uc 33 really lack of responsivness and fell crap, as the same for the plastik knobs. what I like are the rubber buttons.

I´m really thinking of merging the 2 into a new housing, setting a fader horizontaly for Xfading and having lots of knobs for filters and sends on each track for control.

Perhaps I can integrate a few joystiks too.

I just don´t want to spend another 600 euro on something that isn´t really what I need.

I would consider the mawzer if I had to purchase a new one .

Let´s look what the future brings.

It will be build, but no idea about the time and problems wich can occur.

If I didn´t already own the 2, I would build a new one from scratch up using doepfer or ucapps stuff.
I´m sorry but I think it will stay a one piece project for the moment, I simply don´t have the time.

Bang for bucks I would go the bitstream3X route, otherwise the mawzer.

I dont know, but why not?
You pay via paypal, just email them and ask.

If they can´t give you an 110 v ac adaptor you can use a 3th part one, they aren´t expensive. Mine needs 9V 350mAh DC.
Or isn´t it usb powered now?
