Recording external Synth into live with automation

So I'm recording an external synth into Live and when I automate say Filte rcutoff I can click on the clip and see the automation recorded below but if I try to automate saw resonance it will not play back my first automated part. I can still see it but wont play it back? Also does live handle automation differently for external synths then it does a soft synth. When I look at the automated parameters available it doesn't show what the external synths parameter choices are and when I automate something say for instance again filter cutoff it just gives it a number and I'm unable to rename the number? Any help would be appreciated. Thx.

What synth are you using? I assume 'saw resonance' is a parameter on that synth? How do you change it normally when playing the synth?

How are you playing it through Live? External instrument?

What do you mean 'won't play it back'?
